ParticipantI think it stems from Dublin Bus using Phibsboro on its old “Via” sign

ParticipantAlso a Phibsboro resident.
I prefer Phibsboro rather than Phibsborough, because its less anglo. I also prefer Berkely Road pronounced ‘Burkly’ as opposed to ‘Barkly’ (again de-anglo and also the way its said in the US). But I like Dorset Street to be like the county and I can’t stand DorSETT Street (beloved of AA Roadwatch).
But its all a post-colonial mish mash if you ask me. I used to live in Dun Laoire/Dun Laoghaire (or Dun Laoaoighaurie as one mailshot had it) – don’t even start me about that. But it wasn’t Kingstown anyway.

Participanta bit sensitive on our UK heritage then? It’s like ‘Translations’ all over.
I hold with the DorSETT pronunciation. I would have said a majority of (dubliners) used that.
I like the fact that Henry Moore, Earl of Drogheda gave his complete title to all the streets in the city centre (Drogheda street became Sackville St*, became O’Connell St. Of lane became Henry place).
* Same place Dorset St came from. Lord Lieutenant at the time; Lionel Cranfield Sackville, Duke of Dorset.

Participantyer man, clerkin, has a whole book about this kind of stuff, good read it is too.
me, personally, I call it ‘DeBura (as in The Phibs-Bura) but I’m from Ballymun originally so I can get way with all manner of coloquialisms, even if i can’t spell them.
