The Sunday Tribune today has a story about a newly built house in Meath. At first look it’s unremarkable, a vastly oversized dormer bungalow with plastic windows, alarm box on the front and copy of the five lamps dropped in the front garden.

But you would be so wrong. In the article you discover that this house is…
“like of of those charming old world houses off the front of a Christmas card”
“[inspired by] Sir Edwin Lutyens”
“Arts and Crafts Style exterior”
“authentic to the setting”The exterior of the house has a large skirting of brick but seems mostly covered in magnolia coloured render.
Is this a Lutyens feature?
To be fair, it has got the steep roof, tall chimney stack and that vertical arts and crafts patterned tiling on the gables.
The thing is I like pastiche and I always fanced Lutyens’ suburban designs but this isn’t doing it for me.
Are his designs now out of copyright? Could you just build a house based on one of his plans rather than ‘inspired’ by him?

Lutyens’ grand-daughter and her architect hsuband have a design business in London, walked by it in Knightsbridge last year. They could tell you, I’m sure. Ned’s “star” lanterns are sold everywhere in Marrakesh, great value,

yeah read that. You have to laugh at these feature pieces in the property pages. They pass themselves off as people who obviously have taste and sophistication and then they have specially imported plastic sash windows. Yeah really authentic!. I suppose they’re not as evil as the swing out windows.

Thanks Frank, lovely stuff. Hate to think of the cost though, no prices on website.
For me, “recent” period style at its best is Erith and Terry’s house at King Walden Bury. Cannot think of anything as nice in Ireland.
