This was the announcement of the shortlist a month or so back, just announced this morning that they won it…

Shortlist announced: Coleraine Regional Museum with/without Library

The shortlist is announced for the selection of an architect-led team to design a new Regional Museum (with/without Library) in the town centre of Coleraine, Northern Ireland.

Coleraine Borough Council was delighted by the number, calibre and diversity of practices who responded to the call for Expressions of Interest. Fifty-four Expressions of Interest were received from architectural practices across the UK, Ireland, Europe, Australia and the United States. The Jury Panel consisted of Officers and Elected Members from Coleraine Borough Council, the North-Eastern Education & Library Board, with Clare Wright (Wright and Wright Architects) acting as the RIBA Adviser to the competition. The panel selected practices which they felt would be most capable of designing and integrating a Regional Museum/Library building within the historic setting of the ~0.8acre Market Yard site. The five short-listed practices (in alphabetical order) were as follows:

      – Consarc Design Group
      – Heneghan Peng Architects
      – Niall McLaughlin Architects
      – O’Donnell + Tuomey Architects
      – Panter Hudspith Architects

      From ajplus.co.uk today:

Stirling-shortlisted Dubliner O’Donnell + Tuomey Architects has won the competition for a new regional museum for Coleraine town centre in Northern Ireland. The practice, which has developed an impressive international reputation in the last few years, saw off competition from another Hibernian big name, Heneghan Peng. Also on the shortlist, which was picked from a host of international entries, were the Consarc Design Group, Niall McLaughlin and Panter Hudspith. O’Donnell + Tuomey Architects was Stirling-shortlisted last year for the Glucksman Gallery in Cork, which received international acclaim.

The practice will now draw up detailed proposals for the Coleraine museum, which may or may not include a library as well. London-based Claire Wright, who was the RIBA advisor for the competition, said she thought the winning scheme was outstanding. ‘It was a pleasure to be involved in selecting a team from such a high calibre field,’ she said. ‘O’Donnell + Tuomey’s outstanding talent and sensitivity were once again evident in their ideas for this project. I look forward to visiting a wonderful new museum in Coleraine in the not-too-distant future,’ she added.
