ParticipantDoes anyone have access to any statistics about the amount of new buildings in Ireland that are not architect designed? I know the figure is high but would like to see something in print – and also the breakdown for residential/non-residential buildings. Failing Irish stats, UK or other would do. Hard facts desired but anything accepted!
Thanks, Ruth

That’s a pretty charitable description. Vernacular really means something designed in sympathy with its local surroundings and built of local materials. Most non-architect-designed buildings would signally fail in these regards.
Ruth-
I’ve never seen stats, but a good rule of thumb would be that much housing, particularly housing estates, is not architect-designed, and many one-offs too. Occasionally, one-offs are architect-designed, but they usually trumpet this fact from the (sedum) rooftops.
you could also presume that most large-scale buildings such as offices are the work of architects, though factories etc. not so much.
The RIAI, if it’s serious about wanting architects to have a more central role in the more mundane aspects of the built environment such as housing estates, should have stats to back up its case. Or, at the very least, might have a record of the output of its members (which, it should be noted, wouldn’t include all architects).

An important part of that definition is that vernacular architecture is ‘non-designed’ …….but of course in this instance I really wasn’t being serious

InactiveHeh- I suspected as much, but I wasn’t sure. And Messrs Brunskill, Shaffrey et al would probably have your guts for garters if they heard you talking like that! (Although you’d probably get the inaugural IRDA Setanta Medal for such a statement. ;))
