And its gone. Good news. It’s just depressing that DCC didn’t take on this simple message back when this proposal was first mooted:
(1) For the majority of people, the reason they don’t cycle is not that they don’t have or can’t afford a bike, it’s that they feel unsafe cycling on Dublin’s streets.
(2) To encourage people onto bikes – and because it is itself a desirable objective – the streets need to be made safer.
(3) The size, nature and location of these advertising units make the streets LESS safe.
……(a) For goodness sake – they’re deliberately designed to catch motorists’ eyes. A motorist looking at an ad = a motorist not looking at the road.
……(b) They also obscure pedestrians’ and road users’ views of one another.
……(c) By taking up so much of the footpath, they greatly increase the likelihood that a pedestrian will hop out onto the road to get round the obstacle – probably straight into the path of a cyclist – because they “didn’t hear any traffic”. No, bikes don’t have noisy engines.
Spot on.

A 74-year-old cyclist has died following a collision in north Dublin yesterday afternoon. The man received fatal injuries when he collided with a lorry at the junction between Cherrymount Road and Malahide Road in Clontarf. The man, who had not been named last night, was removed to Beaumont Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 3.45pm. Gardaà from Clontarf, who are investigating the crash, said no one else was injured in the incident.
This fatality occured in the middle of the day. RIP.
I note that the Malahide Road is scheduled to have 7 of the larger “Metropole” billboards erected on it.
Given the Boards rejection of all Metropole units that were put before them on grounds of roads safety, who will be held responsible if and when an accident occurs in the proximity of such a roadside distraction?
I wonder who among the elected councillors and DCC planning officials is familiar with the term “Corporate Manslaughter”…
The Dorset Street debacle is indicative of a dangerous, unsafe scheme that should never have gone thru without proper planning; what’s to say it’s not one of many?
This has all been predicted by many posters, with my post above from last Feb being just one.
The Dorset St 24 hr installment and subsequent removal will not have gone unnoticed by interested parties… Should all make for a reference point if and when collisions take place close to other units.
To quote a previous poster, Blood on your hands DCC. 😡

OUTDOOR advertising giant JCDecaux has picked September 8 as the launch date for its controversial high-tech ad panels in Dublin City.
It’s more than a year since Dublin City Council agreed to give JCDecaux 120 billboard sites in exchange for a public bike scheme with 450 free bicycles, as well as some other public facilities.
The project has since been fraught with planning objections, and the fate of 42 of the units still rests with An Bord Pleanala, while the bike project is on hold until next 2009.
In recent weeks, however, JCDecaux has begun offering the first tranche of the digital ad panels.
The first panels will be the smaller free-standing units, similar to those on bus shelters, while the company has yet to announce a launch date for the 50 large “Metropoles” (larger free-standing units).

Another example of the high-quality ‘investigive’ journalism in this country.

(press release was it?)
It’s more than a year since Dublin City Council agreed to give JCDecaux 120 billboard sites in exchange for a public bike scheme with 450 free bicycles, as well as some other public facilities.
And they have failed to meet their planning conditions in the timescale – HINT Story!

Not Sept 8 ????

:confused::confused: what? Are ABP suddenly going to change their mind. 42? Typo? 24….

They’d better NOT be digital 😡 Scrolling is what they have PP for.
*Sigh* Is it too much to ask for some serious journalism….rather than recycled press releases.

Appreciate your further support.@ Smithfield Resi – I take it you’re the bloke who was on Newstalk this morning, and MadsL on boards(you’ve got them well roused over there!). Fair play for spearheading this and getting a result with the councillors. Pity the Newstalk slot didn’t have more time to explore the issues. The interviewer sounded sympathetic but really, there was no time for anything but the most cursory treatment of the subject.

Participantooh big barny on liveline helped along with mannix flynn, it was good he brought in the visual pollution angle but i don’t know how helpeful it was to madsl and co?
richard got his bit at the start though saying its was dangerous
doolan defended the scheme to the hilt
somebody must have pulled his choke chaindoolan said they weren’t allowed to see the contract till the other councils had negotiated with jcdeaux.
some labour guy came on saying he was happy to see the overall amount of advertising being reduced.
they both claimed that hadn’t seen the photos or the signs themselves which makes you wonder what they were discussing the other day at the council.
the video recording of the council meeting is now up
http://www.dublincity.public-i.tv/site/#pp16545at the emergency motions voting at the end
the council had a right go at the city manager but he said
no motion can interfere with the contract.

The manager is afaik either ill-informed or else he misled the council, as he should be well aware that Section 140 could and should be used by councillors to direct officials.

Participantits about both safety and advertising, im not sure you can separate the two. don’t try to denigrate a valid concern over your own.
July 11, 2008 at 4:01 pm #777030Smithfield Resi
ParticipantThat’s not the point I’m making, rather a question of priorities;
1. Clear and present danger
2. The 300 other things why this deal is bad for dublin…..don’t try to denigrate a valid concern over your own.
That’s why I spent nearly €300 on an appeal to make the valid concerns public.
But for now ‘clear and present danger’…
