I have just seen the one on the corner of Dorset St and Synott Place and it is completely shocking, lethal, it completely blocks the traffic light for the junction and the pedestrian crossing.
Lethal + tawdry shite. Shame on you DCC 😡
I hope this thread is of help to any future injured parties requiring compensation from JC Decaux and/ or Dublin City Council from any injuries incurred arising from these billboards.
Moreover, I understand there has not yet been a safety report back to councillors, as was required by March; can anybody shed any further light on this?
It is all simply outrageous.
Well,our City Manager stoutly declares his belief that we have a “World Class” traffic management system in Dublin.
The Rathmines and Dorset St hoardings flatly contradict this and appear to render it as the babblings of somebody possibly not quite “right in the head”.
However,it will probably be more productive to count how many senior City Council administrators decide to holiday in France this year….and next year….and the year after….. 😀 😀 😀

It was requested in March. The original Emergency Motion was phrased as no work to be done until a full H&S study was done on the siting. It was toned down to a request for a H&S report.
I’m finding it hard to believe that some of these sitings have passed a road safety audit. The madness is the PP requires one AFTER they are erected; ‘let’s put them up to see if it is dangerous’.
d) The proposed structure shall be subject to a Stage 3 Road Safety Audit at the applicants expense. This will be done by an approved auditor through a public procurement procedure, which shall audit the entire permitted signage. Any failure shall be removed.
What was wrong with a Stage 2: “Completion of detailed design, prior to tender of construction contract. In the case of Design and Build contracts, a Stage 2 audit shall be carried out in accordance with the requirements of the contract.”
Instead of:
Stage 3: Completion of construction (prior to opening of the scheme to traffic wherever possible).
I’ll bet these Stage 3 Audits have not been done, any more than the requirement to remove 100 48-sheet billboards has been done.
I also got a look at the footing for the one on Parnell Street. Appalling standard of work “Ah sure, just lash a bit’o the ole asssh-felt in there” Looks dreadful. It’s also at about a 35deg angle (let’s catch the motorists eye just at the ped crossing….) Cleverly this is one of the applications where the orientation of the sign was NOT shown on the site plan. The linear lines of the footpath road etc are just f*cked by plonking this down at an random angle.
I am absolutely stunned by the siting of the Unit at Dorset St/Synott Place.
It not alone masks the kerbside traffic signal array but also manages to effectively increase the risk of serious accident to pedesterians concealed behind it too !I have never before witnessed such a complete and total example of Corporate Negligence as is visible here.
At this stage I consider there is sufficient evidence to sustain such a charge against the City Manager and several of the Proffessional branch of DCC as it is quite obvious that none of these people carried out any form of due diligence in relation to this particular location.

You have to be kidding me……5. The developer shall comply fully with the following requirements of the Roads & Traffic Planning Division; a) The proposed structure shall not impede any road signs, traffic lights, pedestrian crossings, vision along kerb edge lines or any other road infrastructure. This may require a slight adjustment in the proposed location as submitted.
Slight adjustment I would recommend here would be about 3 metres to the left….into a skip!

This goes beyond the argument of advertising on our footpaths. This is criminal negligence on the part of DCC, JCDecaux and the contractor. Someone will die at this crossing unless this is removed NOW!
These structures have been slammed by the Dublin Transportation Office, described as a road safety hazard by An Bord Pleanala, a report on their safety has been requested by a city counciller to which no response has been given. If I were a lawyer representing a injury or death compensation claim at this point. I would also be citing the Corporate Manslaughter Bill 2007
Grossly negligent management causing death:
A high managerial agent may be guilty of grossly negligent management causing death if he knew or ought to have known of a substantial risk of death or personal harm and failed to take reasonable efforts to eliminate that risk. Penalties for grossly negligent management include:A fine; and/or
Up to 12 year’s imprisonment; and or
A Disqualification Order whereby the managerial agent may be disqualified from acting in a management capacity by the court for a period not exceeding 15 years.Breach of the order gives rise to a fine of €3,000,000 and/or 2 years imprisonment and/or further disqualification for 10 years.
There’s actually 2 of these outside the Bleedin Horse, the one shown above plus another outside the Bookies opposite.

Thse images portray a situation far worse than anybody could have believed.
Perhaps the structures were erected in darkness by a French crew believing traffic flow to be in the opposite direction ?I really do think that some form of writ should be slapped across the City Managers gob at opening of business tomorrow.
This thing encompasses all that can possibly be wrong with the Irish concept of good governance and responsibility.In order to get to this actual stage the proposal will have been vetted by a cross section of EVERY professional department in DCC plus an Garda Siochana.
Are we being asked to believe that the sum total of every professional who inspected this amounted to a total inability to refer to reality as it pertains to public safety.There is a very real need now for some form of impeachment mechanism whereby people such as the City Manager can be forced to account for their decisions.
The images of that buggy and pedestrian totally concealed behind this insanely placed structure tell the entire sorry tale.
One can see where people such as Noel O Gara get their confidence from when dubious planning and irregularity on the part of a Civic Authority result in such a potentially fatal mess.
It might be worth mailing those images to Gay Byrne or show them to Joe,as in the absence of true democracy in this pastiche of a Republic it`s probably the best chance we have of securing accountability ! 😡 😡 😡

Ah ctesiphon has saved me having to post the same images. Even on a pedestrian street where space is plentiful, the overwhelming sense of the whoring out the public domain hits you like a sack of spuds. It’s extraordinary just how offensive these units are in the flesh – you really have to observe them in real life to garner the true sense of outrage felt by their blocking of your path and taking advantage of public amenity for grubby commercial interests.
I agree with Stephen that the design of the units is smart and elegant, but as Smithfield Resi has noted the sharp edges are lethal should one have a tumble against one. Even on a busy street like Henry Street (the mayhem of Christmas anyone…), the potential for some bad knocks and scrapes is considerable. Indeed on that point, Henry Street is horrific as it to navigate in December – this are going to make it a nightmare.
Also what’s with the hokey generic skyline – it’s not even informed by its host city.
But a minor detail in a thoroughly dismal saga.

Aah go on- mine were grabbed in a hurry at lunchtime, burdened with groceries, merely for info purposes. I’d be keen to see someone else’s take on them too.
I don’t mind the two Henry Street ones as much – at least they have a bit of breathing space, though the siting is crude – but the Liffey Street ones are horrors.

Ive seen them outside the Tourist Office on Andrew St (generally an okay spot as the pavement is very wide) and in the median along Parnell Street
In fairness I think the finish is temporary…in the real sense, not the DCC roadworks dept sense
Would that be temporary in the same way that historic granite has been ‘islanded’ by a 50m strech of asphalt ‘footpath’ on Thomas Street for the last six months? (keep meaning to post pics)
In other news…
The City Council just passed a emergency motion (unanimously and agreed as without debate) that;
All work be halted on the JC Decaux scheme until a complete health and safety report has been issued (words to that effect)
eyes peeled people (date stamps on photos are welcome together with photos of people in hi-vis continuing to put them up)
