Finally got to see (albeit from a distance) the former GNR Engine Shed in Clones, Co Monaghan at the weekend. Will post a picture later.
In the late 1920s early 30s (I believe), one of the Maddens from nearby Hilton Park who were directors of the railway, visited Milan and saw this new Engine Shed, got the plans copied and built at their works in Clones.

Its a section of a donut in plan built out of reinforced concrete ‘hoops’ and very impressive from the hill above. Unfortunetly it is surrounded by modern industrial buildings so I couldn’t gain access.

Am looking for more info, especially on the Milanese equivalent………

Here’s the best shot I could get. I have knocked back the clutter around it so a better glimpse of the structure can be seen.

I really want to know more about this as it may be in danger. The company whose premises it is in is closing down and I imagine its not the most adaptable building around even though the internal space must be great.

I cannot find any mention of it in any books here at home. Will visit the Architectural Archive during next week.

To reply to the original query (Clones loco shed) I got your query yesterday as Secretary of the IHAI via Ron Cox.

The loco shed in Clones was built in 1926 of precast concrete and subsequently, a similar shed was built in Portadown, since demolished.

An attempt was made to demolish the one at Clones but the strength of the building resisted this attack! (Even the Irish Army couldn’t blow it up).

As for the Milanese link, I have never heard that story, but I have copied the query to the Railway Archaeology discussion group with a view to getting an answer.

I was told the story by a member of the Madden family.
