I think it looks great, but especially the music and the little flying crown that zooms over from Britain to Ireland. Reminds me of the opening credits of Dad’s Army.

Absolutely. It’s one of the few areas where the ever-increasing DVD gimmickery of modern day education is very valuable; nothing can beat a striking visual depiction of the medieval city.

It’s a great production and well worth a look (I got a sneaky copy a few months ago). The three-dimensional aspect and smooth movement through the city is very effective in bringing it to life and really cannot be understimated. Extraordinarily, the city has never been animated before now. The ten-minute chapters are also well chosen: The City Walls, Christchurch Cathedral, Dublin Castle, a Medieval Street and St. Mary’s Abbey.

Of course as ake mentioned, it’s aimed at children so should be borne in mind(!), but still more than credible enough to be seen watching 🙂

Just two niggly points. The explanation of the development of Christchurch is confusing and visually inaccurate, and could have been made more thorough. And secondly, it’s a shame more morphing of modern-day street scenes into medieval ones wasn’t indulged in. Even just one or two more famous spaces like Christchurch Place, Fishamble Street, Lord Edward Street, Cork Hill or Parliament Street. It would have made the connection with the ancient city all the more vivid.

But a great accomplishment on the part of DCC, OPW, National Museum, Dublinia and Christchurch Cathedral. Hopefully we’ll see more of this type of collaboration in the future. And of course it highlights in very stark terms the absence of anything remotely approaching such grandiose visually stimulating historical documentary on the part of broadcasting in Ireland, but a debate for somewhere else…
