i have never actually started a thread so i hope people like this one. 🙂 this complex, manor mills maynooth, is presently under construction and is due to open next month. i would be curious to see what other people think of this massive develpoment. i have never seen anything quite like it in maynooth. it is quite a tall development which will have plenty of appartments, shops, a creche, a pub, a restaurant and several other stores. it will also contain an easons and a massive dunnes stores. maynooth has come a long way over the years due to it’s close proximity to dublin and the opening of the m4 several years ago. there is even a lidl store under construction too. aldi only opened their doors not even a year ago and tesco maynooth is huge. the development of manor mills did cause a stir as it was appealed. it certainly towers over some of the little house around. maynooth has been identified as an area for this sort of development. any comments on what you think of this sort of development in a town like this? my own opinion is that it will be an asset for the town. having the likes of dunnes with a food/drapery department as well as easons on your doorstep will be very handy. the appartments were all sold before the foundation had even been dug and what a foundation! i will be one of the first through the doors when they open next month. 🙂

I live in Maynooth myself alpha. I have a house there and an appartment in Dublin. I am not being nosey but are you from Maynooth too? You are right in saying that this development was appealed. I can’t imagine why. I guess it just boils down to traffic congestion plus the fact it is very large an tall. Did you know that there are plans to introduce a massive amount of appartments along Carton Avenue up to 6 storeys in height? The avenue itself can’t be touched as it is protected and rightly so. I received the plans for this other development within the last 2 years. If they go ahead with the appartments along the avenue Maynooth will be growing at an even faster rate! Those fields along either side of the avenue are in a bad state, overgrown and not really in use anymore. There was also talk of doing some construction work beside Tesco. I heard them mention a cinema but to be honest I don’t know whether it is going ahead or not. I am delighted to see all these plans for Maynooth. It’s great. A good topic alpha. 😉

thank you. i am pleased to see a response to my thread. to answer your question… yes i am from maynooth. it’s a small world. i too heard about the cinema at tesco but i haven’t a clue what is going on there. all the land tesco bought yet nothing else in sight for that site. a cinema would be so cool. as for the appartments going along the avenue, i don’t know what is happening there either. such a project would take forever as hundreds of appartments have been proposed. they will have to put in sewage works, electrical works, pipelines and so on. it they go ahead with the latter maynooth will be extremely built up. i quite like the green fields even though they are overgrown. it makes that part of the town peaceful. i’d say it will look very different in years to come. it has already seen massive changes over the last 10-15 years.

being originally from maynooth, i visited there last month and was disappointed to say the least viewing the manor mills development. The scale of the development is overbearing on its surroundings and totally detracts from what used to be a distinctive skyline. I walked to school by the mills site and while people must be thankful that the ‘mill aroma’ is gone i wonder how many people are thank ful for what has come in its place. Development itself is to be welcomed – it is just the form of it that i must question…just doesnt seem to have been any consideration how the building would sit well beside the ‘old tree lined village aesthetic that maynooth once enjoyed…boasting both heritage and beauty in the castle and university environs…the manor mills is symbolic of the times we are living in – money hungry short term planning – money made manor mills and manor mills shall make money – there are no peripheral considerations anymore and the development shall offer nothing of tangible value in the long term to the local community…sure it’s handy to have an easons etc. on your doorstep but at what price?…i just dont see the sense in the actual scale of the development…and i dread to think of the traffic implications!…

i do think it is far too big. however it will be very handy. i’d rather go for a 10 min walk to a shopping centre than get stuck in a car for an hour trying to get in to the city centre.

i am curious about some of the other shops going in which i don’t know about yet. there is plenty of room for them. i wonder what they’ll be? oh well not too long to go now. i’d say it will be packed on the day of the opening. maybe a government official might do the honours! 🙂

I see that a McDonalds is under construction in Lucan at present. It will be right beside the newly redeveloped Maxol. I wonder will there be such a place in Manor Mills? Maynooth could do with a McDonalds. I like Supermacs but would prefer McDonalds. Yummy.

I know where you are talking about. Lucan already has a mcdonalds and now they are getting another one. i too would like to see one in maynooth. it certainly has the people. you never know though. perhaps it will some day. a drive thru would be even better. i could nip down after work! i love mcdonalds’ food. 🙂

I haven’t been in Maynooth in ages, I went to School in Salesians and remember Maynooth fondly, a very nice town. I hope the development doesn’t ruin this, I am glad to see high density housing going in along the railway though.

the traffic these past few days has worsened in maynooth. i think the new traffic lights are to blame. i can’t imagine what it will be like tomorrow when dunnes opens. oh well, at least i can walk to it in less than 10 minutes. 🙂

i was in the new shopping centre today and was very impressed by what i saw! dunnes is excellent and so is easons. there is also a butchers, a betting shop, a chemist, several clothes shops, a cafe, a jewellers, a computer store plus several more that are just waiting to be opened in a few days time. i saw a sign that said “coming soon, bank of scotland”. i wonder… will this be a high street bank??? i hope so. it is soooooo convenient. it is a welcome addition to my town. the traffic is awful though but that’s to be expected. oh well… i am just glad i won’t have to sit in it. i can be there on foot in less than 10 mins. 😀

Yes alpha, it will be a high street bank. I was in there yesterday and my jaw droped. I am considering joining Bank of Scotland when they open in Maynooth. A very welcome addition indeed. Why anybody would want to block a centre like that is beyond me! It is way better than the smelly mill that was there. Some of those buildings were in terrible condition. It is so handy. One need never go into Dublin again. Dunnes is open 24 hours. Did you see Tesco alpha? It is basically deserted. I’d say they are fuming and rightly so. They have had too much custom for far too long. Nice to see competition.

very true about tesco and excellent news about bank of scotland. i wonder what their service will be like??? i am also wondering if there will be a travel agent in the shopping centre? travel options pulled out of maynooth a while ago now. i am still amazed at the height of the development. it is quite tall for our little town. that doesn’t bother me though. i enquired about my favourite mag in easons today and was so pleased to hear that they had it in stock. no more trips into town so. 😉 there was so much to see that i didn’t have enough time to view all. maybe at the weekend. i saw some nice shoes there for 50 euro…

I think you’re in the wrong place buddy. People round here don’t usually wish for more McDonald’s & get misty eyed over the new Tesco. Is the architecture any good? I’m all for free speech, but still!

Architecture? Just to let you know… not eveyone that chats on this website sticks to just architecture as the topic. I think that Manor Mills is such a huge development and deserves discussion. Tesco does too. Maynooth is changing and I am happy to see a thread on it. I can accept that they are not great architecture but they are there and have made an impact on the town.

That makes sense to me. Everybody talks about what goes on in our cities. It is nice to see people talking about what’s happening in our towns too. I see Dublin/Cork/Limerick/Derry/Belfast and so on get a mention. I guess these are not the only places that exist in Ireland. As for McDonalds, Lucan now has two of them. From what I can tell Maynooth would have the population for these things and I know that Supermacs is already there. I have passed through it. McDonalds would be good competition. Maynooth is also very close to Dublin. I hear talk of extending the Dart out there.

Anyway, I was simlpy pointing out that McDonalds are all over the place and that it would be nice to see one in my town too. I don’t see any harm in that.
