That was just a meaningless mistake on my part shanekeane, my habits here were formed before the sub-forums where introduced, so I clicked the new thread button without looking to see which section I was in; I assume Paul will fix it at some point. Nothing sinister. I did already apologize above.
Nothing of the sort – I demand that Dublin’s annexation of Kilkenny be recognised for the legitimate cause that it is :p

InactiveLong article about this in the Times today:
Heritage body says new road in Kilkenny intrusive

KeymasterThis concern was echoed by the department’s chief archaeologist, Brian Duffy, in a letter to the design team in July 2007, when he wrote that the proposed road – originally conceived in 1978 – would “cross through the heart of the historic city of Kilkenny”.
“We object to the proposed scheme proceeding because of the severe impacts on the archaeology of one of Ireland’s premier historic cities”, Mr Duffy said
He added that the department was “surprised” that no alternatives had been put forward for consideration.
It is entirely shocking that the Department’s own chief archaelology can be over-ruled by the Department for Transport.
We would recommend that the department reassess the sustainability of and justification for the proposal in the first instance, and address the wider severance impact on Kilkenny’s urban environment”, said An Taisce’s heritage officer, Ian Lumley
It speaks volumes that Lumley felt compelled to comment himsrlf in the context of a strong local association.
How can a scheme conceived in 1978 possibly be considered relevant 30 years later?
Strengthening the outer orbital links surely would have made a lot more sense.

InactiveLetter in today’s times from the Urbanism people denying that they endorsed the road which is a great relief, it kind of messed up my idea of the what the urbanism people were about when I read the mayor’s claim they supported this proposed piece of vandalism.
Madam, – In a report by Frank McDonald (December 1st) on the Heritage Council’s objections to the proposed central access route in Kilkenny, Mayor of Kilkenny Pat Crotty was quoted as saying that the city had won the Academy of Urbanism’s Great Town Award because “what we’re proposing, what we’re doing and what we’ve done to date is exactly what needs to be done . . .”
The academy would like to make it clear that last year’s assessment process was based on the academy’s core principles of governance, local distinctiveness and sense of place, commercial success and viability, functionality, environmental and social sustainability and user friendliness, based on what we found at the time of our visit.
The academy does not comment or give advice on future projects. – Yours, etc,
JOHN THOMPSON,
Chairman,
Academy of Urbanism,
Cowcross Street,
London EC1.
