Jurys – Parnell Street

isn’t it wierd about hotels, historically the hotel was one of the nicest building in any town, now that is rarely true and jurys must be one of the worst.

Have you ever seen the Jury’s in Edinburgh? it looks like a Russian prison…

That new hotel on Grand Canal Street with Kitty O’Sheas pub in it is terrible too.

Look around you, your average apartment block and your average new hotel are almost interchangeable – its really cheap architecture

– a bit of brick cladding to suggest heritage
– a bit of stone layered on because the architects are trying to persuade themselves that they have designed a good addition to the streetscape…
– and a clumsy attempt to turn a corner

I don’t know why you’re surprised…

Who were the architects? I believe in name and shame – maybe we could start a poison pen campaign to their “creatives”.. or was it ‘designed’ by a Willy Joe one lunchtime while the lads were down in Londis getting his hang roll and bottle of milk?

Jaaz, I hear you on that building that sticking its ugly rear onto Capel street – tinted windows – mmmm and as for Kitty O’ Sheas – great location wasted, truly depressing

The Jurys hotel at Ballsbridge has got to be one of the worst buildings in Dublin, so what is it with Jurys that they have penchant for piss-poor pre-fab crap, shame on them………

As bad as this Jury’s is, I think the Capel St. building is truly terrible – a nightmare. Its a shock to see and, in my opinion, worse that any I can think of – certainly up there with Hawkins House, Apollo House etc.

The truly shocking this is just how much of that part of Abbey St. it takes up – the building just seems to go and go and go – so linear – its the most horrible design and materials I have seen in the shape of a building built since the 1970s.

The person who has designed this should have his eyes poked out for imposing such a monstrosity as this on the city – something we will be stuck with for years. Is the Luas really worth this price?

The buildings it has replaced were standard bearers – typical no nonsense Dublin late 19th century red bricks, contributing to the rich streetscape of Capel Street and bringing that streetscape around the corner into Abbey St.

that building is really unbelievable, truly horrible.

The good news is that another similar creation is being built just across the street. I suppose the thinking behind it is to create a corridor of modern buildings to complement the Luas. AXA Insurance (or whatever the company is in the old PMPA offices) are also looking to demolish the comfortable redbrick 19c houses on Abbey St to build a new office develeopment. The of course there is the new development at Chapter House.

Banality in its extreme.

The new Jurys on Parnell St won’t look out of place on this street. It’s like every other new building that had gone up here in the last few years. In fact the original terrace opposite the back door of the Ilac looks more out of place beside these monstrosities.

However I have to agree that the Capel St building is a greater sin. How did it happen?

I don’t think the Parnell Street one is particularly bad. The Jury’s blot on the landscape prize, in my book, has to go to the one in Waterford.

I agree but it’s no longer owned by Jurys 😉

For some reason, I had it in the back of my mind that the Jurys in Waterford was actually in Kilkenny County and that is one of the reasons they were able to build it where they did! Anyone know anything about it?

I didn’t know it had changed hands. Anyone know who owns it now?
It is actually on the Kilkenny side of the River Suir, but I don’t know if that explains why it was built where it was. I’m sure the former Waterford Corpo had some planning jurisdiction over the area…

It’s known as the Ard Rí now, part of McEniff/Tyrconnell Group.

I’m not from Waterford but recently heard there is a huge on going spat between Waterford CC and Killkenny CC over the land on that side of the river. This spat has really hindered a proper planned and integrated growth of the city. The ring road is an apparent example of the problem taking years to complete!

Again I stress this is all hear say and someone from Waterford will no doubt have more concise details.
