Is silver the new brown?

In the case of industrial/ business parks silver does seem to be the new brown.
As in, if you look at circa 1980’s industrial estates many have brown cladding &/or have a red trim to whatever colout they were. Nowadays many industrial buildings are clad in silver & greys – just as brown and red trim buildings look pretty dated now – i think the same will be said about silver 10 years from now – never mind the fact that it is getting a bit monotonus & boring.
Silver & greys can look good but it losses its effect when you enter estates full of exactly the same thing.

Its true, even every second car on the street is silver now aswell, i cant tell the difference any more. Silver is also terribly conservative its like if you cant make a decision then you just go with the aould silver, yawn! Also time seems to be very cruel to silver buildings, all the imperfections are highlighted by the reflection of light on its surfaces.

I’m so sick of granite cladding. It has emerged in reaction to poor quality finishes of previous decades. Any architect now simply throws on some granite to give their creation a ‘quality’ finish, moreover though, it’s used by developers to swoon the CC into approving their development, because of it’s use of ‘natural’, ‘quality’ and long-lasting materials, that ‘improve and complement the local amenities’, ‘reflecting the materials and historic building methods/materials of the area’ blah blah blah
It’s so cliched and utterly mundane. See the new building on (I think) Adelaide Road (the extention to Iveagh Court), the building is granite, the surrounding walls are granite, the paving is granite…
Wheras granite can work well, it has literally swamped the city in the past 10 years.
What about sandstone, Ireland’s forgotton stone? The Victorians loved it as it can come in beige, tan, red and many other shades (although some sandstones do weather badly)

I agree the new look Roches Stores is monumentally awful….

Defo….Silver is the new Brown….and has been for a long time…….as already said, nearly every car is silver…….Interiors are ‘Chrome’ …..aka…. tubular steel and pine as well as Wide Screen TV’s, Mobile phones, Hi Fi’s, Mini Disc’s, Walkmans, Fridges, etc, etc…..etc……everything is trendy post modern, pretentiously futuristic….will be all outta date when the next fashion fickle thing comes along. Are’nt people so stupid….really….. aka the general public.
Don’t forget yer trendy skin head, designer tatoos and Nazi like specs, combats and trainers, lipstick lesbians, …..oh and reality TV….a field day for Jean Paul Gaultier types.

Has anyone tried buying a black TV recently? They’ve all gone “silver” I use quotes cos usually it’s just waiting to be scratched plasticy junk colour. Fashion is fashion – and as we all know fashion always looks awful once it’s not fashionable (if you catch my drift). Who remembers having one of those wood effect TV’s??? yuck!

Safe to say in 20 years time we’ll all look back and cringe at what we thought was sooooo muchbetter and enlightened that tacky brown – so yes, um… silver is the new brown.

If silver is the new brown, then there’s some little graffiti-spraying kids in Wales who are up on the trend, albeit via largely remedial technique. Was one of the first things I noticed from the train.

And how fickle am I, having been in love with silver until it started appearing everywhere…

I blame the audi TT. Not only are they always silver but they are always parked in the computer mock ups of new developments to demonstrate that it is a cutting edge and aspirational bundle of shoe boxes.

Aken that is too funny – I meant of course that they’re tagging in silver!

And mmm, gray, another nice sort of non-color, color.

It’s hard to know how dated silver will feel once everyone has circled back to using hues that now speak of decades past.

Then there’s the whole psychology of color, what makes people anxious or calm. And we can’t forget color blindness. Some folks largely see stuff only in brown…

Of course brown is back now, although not for external finishes. But for slick dark flooring, countertops, raised panelling etc, set off typically with white or cream walls, and is esp snazzy.

Yes Aken the Liffey Valley Centre looks like one of those modern prisons and the turret like (search?) towers dion’t help it at all. Then again the whole place is built on funny money so there should be a few people that supported it heading the direction of the big house – soon hopefully
