Hello I’m flummouxed. I need to find a location for a publicity photoshoot, for an upcoming procuction in the Abbey (Importance of being Earnest). Does anyone know of a hotel/cafe in Dublin City centre which would approximate French Art Nouveau?… I know we have Cafe en Seine etc but it just doesn’t cut the mustard.. I need something reasonably authentic. All I’m looking to do is position a table and chair in front of something like a window or entrance. I’d appreciate any suggestions!

Bruxelles – the exterior is more victorian, but the lettering is a bit nouveau – and Brussels itself was the home of the Art Nouveau!

Checked Bruxelles out…. intreresting tilework! hmm Lettering is right but the interior is still victorian all the same…. Is there no Art nouveau at all in Dublin?
PS Harry Clarke window in Bewleys is fine but does anyone know of a similar window that actually gets daylight?…. and that goes down to somewhere near ground level?
Ta!

The Fleet room in Bewelys on Fleet St is possibly a slightly staid version of what you are looking for it is however possibly more Edwardian than a full French/Austrian Nouveau interior.

Not to distract from the thread but is the production scheduled for the Gate Theatre. Going to see Mrs Windermeres fan but would love to see The Importance of Being Earnest again..

In a sort of funny irony (in the context of Loos ‘Ornament and Crime’ perspective) there are now sketches of the original ornate staircase of the dining hall adorning the walls of the Kartner Bar replica in Trinity. Obscure, but very interesting little bar all the same.
It might be a bit stripped down for what you are looking for though Roskav.

Thanks Daniel … I’ve never been to the Loos bar… your suggestion has made me want to check it out. Where in Trinity is it exactly and how do you get in?…. Also Wynn’s Hotel, when you consider how it looks outside, potentially would be ideal… Have you ever been inside though? The best part is the (v small) lobby. The two main public areas have been decorated similarly to a lot of family run country hotels … you know with terra-cotta carpet and v light timber bar …. with the odd bit of brass thrown in…. Think of that hotel in Ballinasloe … Hayden’s is it? I’ll check out the bar today if I can… Thanks!…. Also thanks to the other suggestors…. Davy Byrnes isn’t really close though…and I think Bewley’s off Fleet St is now closed.. also not really Art Nouveau… but lovely for taking portraits allright… Beautiful light coming down off one side with some yellow light too though the stained glass.

You would need to probably contact the Buildings Office in there. It is above the Dining Hall and I think it is restricted to Trinity staff and Fellows of the college.

Actually … hadn’t seen an image of it in years… here’s one of the original…. not remotely Nouveau…. teeny bit of Deco.

There was also an article in the Irish Arts Review about the restoration of the Dining Hall which included a piece about it. ‘Trinity College Dining Hall (Restoration)’ Reihill A. Vol 3 no 1 (1986) 26

That is why I said that I thought it would be a little to stripped down for what you wanted earlier.
Best of luck with it.

Yeah you have to be staff or a guest of staff to get into that bar. It’s quite surprising when you enter it at first; it just seems really odd to enter a real/full bar through a door in an ornate corniced corridoor containing large oil paintings of aristocracy, plush carpets and chandeliers. It feels like it was designed for for alcho staff who want a bit of solitude while imbibing in contrast to the nearby senior common room – a massive open ornate room taking up most of the width of the dining hall building with a gentleman’s club feel and bottles of brandy, etc. sitting on sideboards for self service and large comfy chairs for perusing newspapers, etc.

Rather sinister Notjim…. not sure how to answer that one! I’m looking at getting some nice wallpaper and a potted plant at this stage… or a cheap filght to Brussels or Paris.

Isn’t there a membership fee to use the Common Room – €100 a year or something?
Roused a bit of controversy about this time last year…Sounds like a magnificent place up there!

There is like 10 Eur a month, or maybe 12.70 to pay for the tea and coffee: i don’t think there was any controversy. the bar looks exactly like the picture of the original above, only its the other way around.
sorry roskav, i didn’t mean to sound too sinister or, at least, only mock sinister, i was refering to about a year ago when i was shopped for posting a (your?) picture of the proposed nassau street development on this site and had my hands and face slapped by college.

Thanks for your help everybody but It’s definitely Laura Ashley Wallpaper .. a folding screen, table and chair…. with a frondy plant…. The trick will be not to make it like “The restaurant at the end of the universe” or some similar BBC set from the eighties. I think it is amazing though that in Dublin .. the whole aspect of Nouveu seems to be in decoration rather than the main substance of a building. I’ve seen the Horta house in Brussels and I can’t say that I like it that much…. quite dark considering all the guff about light… the nicest place is the open stairwell…. There was a fantastic cafe in La Rochelle…. huge (quite low) open space with the columns seeming to spread like papyrus as they hit the ceiling. I remember thinking that Bewleys must have been based on something similar.

Whooley’s Pharmacy in Sandymount has an Art Nouveau facade. I don’t know about the interior but would that be suitable?

Roskav,
If you(re still looking for something may I suggest the Iveagh baths, the only art-nouveau building that I know of in town. Don’t ask me how you’ll gain admittance but if you ask them nicely you’d never know.
-
June 21, 2005 at 9:47 pm #756973roskavParticipant
Thanks again folkes … nice photos of pharmacy Paul … have to go and look! … Also thanks shaun.. It never occured to me … and I drive past it at least 5 times a week… Doh. I’ll have a look inside if I can.. just for interest though, as I carried out the threatened BBC 80’s set decoation this morning .. the frondy plant will now re-locate to the bathroom at home… so there is a positive outcome!

Avalon House on Aungier Street?…. Not sure if its Art Nouveau.
-
June 24, 2005 at 5:04 pm #756975roskavParticipant
Checked out Iveagh Baths.. think the only remotley Nouveau thing is part of the facade… would people agree it’s more Arts and Crafts than Nouveau? Still have to have a closer look at Avalon but not expecting a Damascus experience…. Did the shoot … It should be a good show… It’s Oscar Wilde at the end of his life in a Paris cafe (hence the nouveau) …. he casts the waiters in a performance of The Importance of being Earnest while he plays lady Bracknell…It starts in July… I’ll keep you posted!

Yes Roskav, I guess you’re right, it’s more Mackintosh than Horta, let’s face it lads, there just is no art-nouveau in Dublin town….one of the reasons that I love living here in Antwerp is all the art-nouveau and original modern buildings.
