ParticipantThey have closed the Hapenny recently for restoration work. The bridge certainly needs an overhaul, especially a new walkway, but is it true that their replacing much of the original ironwork with replicas?

ParticipantI think that’s generally the idea…. you cannot see how much of it they are trashing

ParticipantThey’re keeping the bridge covered because of the amount of sand-blasting work that is being done. Otherwise, walking along the Bailey bridge would be even less pleasant that it already is. Also, I had heard that as much ironwork as possible would be preserved

ParticipantI remember hearing that the contract was for six months. When the liffey street traders heard this they insisted on a replacement bailey bridge as they felt six months without river crossings at this point would be disasterous for their business.
As to the ironwork, i imagine that post-botanical garden restoration of the Turner glasshouse, they are using similar technology and that all that can be preserved will be.
Does any one know what colour the bridge will be when finished? is it planned to restore the original colour paint as in the Turner glasshouse?

ParticipantI was in touch with Dublin Corporation and they tell me that the renovated Ha’penny Bridge is scheduled to reopen at the end of November.

ParticipantI managed to look at what is going with the bridge yesterday and there seems to be quite a lot of steps leading up to it at each side – this is because the original gradient of the bridge is being reestablished. I wonder though will this work.
They are also putting up the walls (spannig outwards) at each end – similar to the Millenium bridge - November 8, 2001 at 9:27 am #717109

ParticipantI saw this morning that a crane had fallen off the podium in the river and was partially immersed in the water…….it’s arm too had crashed through part of the scaffolding that surrounds the newly refurbished bridge. Could have been disasterous for the poor Ha’penny.

ParticipantBreaking news from the irish times
“Vandals pushed a crane into the River Liffey last night, a spokeswoman for Dublin Corporation said.
Gardaà have sealed off the south quays, causing traffic disruption to morning commuters, while efforts to salvage the machine begin.
The crane was being used on refurbishment work on the landmark Ha’Penny bridge.
The spokeswoman said vandals mounted a floating pontoon and pushed the crane into the water. She could not confirm the value of the crane or if it would be written off.
A Garda spokeswoman said the closure was to facilitate “emergency repair work”.”
Idiots!

ParticipantThe £1.8m refurbishment project on the city centre landmark, which was built in 1816, started last June and the bridge was set to re-open on December 15. It is unclear whether yesterday’s drama will delay that opening.

ParticipantI passed by yesterday and could see in to the work. Looks very advanced, most railings seem to be back in place, there is new stonework where the toll booths were to allow people to stand while waiting on the lights to change. Cannot come too soon, as that temporary bridge is a terrible eyesore.

ParticipantIt appears that they are using cladding (wallpaper) rather than solid stone around the entrance to the bridge from the foothpath (Where the tollbooths were)….a cheap effort?
