ParticipantHi, I’m doing a thesis on my walk to college each day and am wondering does anyone know what’s planned for the large site on Hammond Lane/Church Street alongside the Luas? OPW workers told me the Land Registry were originally supposed to go there but now I see they’re planning a new building in Roscommon. Any help would be much appreciated please!

InactiveIf you go to http://www.dublincity.ie and then go to ‘planning’ and do a planning search with ‘hammond lane’ as the search title it will give you details of various planning applications for the area. The one at the bottom of the list gives details of an archaeological dig:
I tried to paste the direct link here, but it doesn’t seem to work.

InactiveThanks a lot Phil and Pot Noodle – the dig finished at least two years ago so I suppose it’ll just lie idle now like the new building at May Lane. I’ll keep watching anyway. Someone put curtains on the cut-out in the hoarding the other day!

InactiveDidn’t even hem the damn thing.
If you’re gonna be putting up street art curtains you may as well stitch up the hem. I don’t mind them not putting up a curtain rail or a valence but the hem is what matters. Sheer bloody laziness is what it is.
Makes me mad so it does…

InactiveOh doesn’t it just lift the spirits when there’s a meeting of minds, PTB? I couldn’t agree more: the glossy fabric an affront to the streetscape aesthetic, the achingly self-conscious tie-backs plucked from Arnotts’ 1983 summer collection, and the frayed edging crass beyond comprehension. Truly, the mind boggles.

So true, so true! What do they teach the youth in these so-called ‘art schools’ these days? There’s simply no appreciation of craft any more… ๐
*le sigh*

InactiveBump.
The remaing derelict buildings on Hammond Lane have finally been demolished. So was just wondering if anybody knew what was going in there.

InactiveYes, I was very sad to see a pile of rubble there on Friday – I’ve been watching that house and site for the last few years and got some interesting info about it from the 1911 Census. It was in a bad state from drug addicts apparently and the OPW were very eager to demolish it.
The OPW applied for Planning 20 Mar 2009 as follows:
Demolition and removal of a dilapidated three storey building (no. 2 Hammond Lane), its supporting structure and the surrounding boundary walls. It also includes the excavation for the purpose of research and discovery, a site of archaeological and historic interest and a system of secant piling along the boundary on Hammond Lane and Church Street. A new quality wooden fence will be erected on the site boundary along the street line of Hammond Lane and Church Street. It will match in height and specification the existing fencing.

InactiveHope this pic uploads ok (demolition commencing on the sunken site, taken the other day).
Trying to find out what might become of this pivotal site is a very difficult task; just shows how poor DCC are at communicating the interests of property developers at key sites to the public (until its too late for the public to take an active role in any potential development)

InactiveThe remaining area is being excavated at the moment. Archaeologists have found a Viking Type 1 house which was built over a wattle-lined ditch.

InactiveThanks Dan, that’s interesting. There are no ‘windows’ in the hoarding any more so I can’t see in these days. Do you know where I can get more info on the dig?
