Just to follow up on a random thread of about two weeks ago sent to this site. Falling prey to the pitfalls of over zealous research, I posted up an indignant blarge about how they were going to knock down Hague’s convent in Cookstown. I knew there was another location in the town where nuns used to reside, but didn’t consider it to be a convent as such. The fact that the dates of construction of both places were tantalisingly close, only a year apart, led me to the erroneous conclusion that the websites listing Hague’s works were talking of the same place, and that therefore Hague must have built the convent I thought he did.

Wrong. I was wrong. Or at least I have no definite factual or even anecdotal evidence to suggest that Hague had a hand in the place. So I feel at least I must come back and be as forthright in reversal as I was dull in zeal.

Nevertheless, for anyone interested (and I did receive replies of help and suggestion for which I am very grateful) the fate of the convent under threat of demolition has received the attentions of the Ulster Architectural Heritage Society and many local people have contacted the Environment and Heritage Service, bodies who concern themselves with the survival of noteworthy buildings at risk in Northern Ireland.

The local newspaper (Mid Ulster Mail) has printed a letter against the proposals, and I believe this week it will be the front page story. There is also a petition doing the rounds, and some leaflets being distributed to the effect of Save the Convent. Awareness has been raised.

I will try and post up a photo of the building to close these threads of mine so anyone who’s interested can take a look. Apart from that, thank you again to the people who replied to my initial appeal. I appreciate your interest and advice.

      James Mc Allister
