ParticipantMorning All,
Could anyone shed some more light on who are the GIAI (Group of Independent Architects of Ireland)?? I have done a Google search but didn’t come up with to much info. Does anyone know what is the legal standing of the GIAI is – are they on the same legal footing as the RIAI?? How does one join & what sort of requirements are there for membership??
Regards,
MJ.

KeymasterFirst I’ve heard of this – if you get a contact, perhaps you can pass it on to me, would be interested in finding out what they’re about.

ParticipantAll I have found is the following taken from the RIAI web page, http://www.riai.ie/?id=6298, it’s in relation to the RIAI Submission to Competition Authority; Section 6: Registration; Part 2
“Since 1997, and following the recommendations of the Strategic Review Committee, there has been extensive consultation on the proposals under the Building Control Bill with bodies representing architects other than RIAI members, the Forum for the Construction Industry, and Government Departments, relating to the agreement of these proposals by the Forum for the Construction Industry. The proposals for registration set out in a Frame for Registration for the Architectural Profession in Ireland, has been agreed by the Architects and Surveyors Institute, The Group of Independent Architects in Ireland, The Incorporated Association of Architects and Surveyors and the Irish Architects Society”.
So they do exist, but on trying the golden pages there is no mention of them!!

KeymasterSo they’re not splitters from the RIAI or anything?

Participanti would imagine (read “guess”) they are a body to represent so-called architects who haven’t qualified with a degree or diploma in architecture or architectural technology. their advertising is woeful if i’m guessing right.
maybe not so much “splitters” as an alternative to proper qualifications.

ParticipantI reckon your guess could be right but I reckon they might be in place to be a sort of thorn in the side of the RIAI. As the RIAI want it all there own way in regards to Architecture in Ireland. To be truthful if The Group of Independent Architects in Ireland where more pro-active to architectural technologist in regards to setting up their own practices & seeing architectural technologists as people who have done a four year degree course & not a one year CAD course, & fighting for a part time architecture degree in Ireland, then I would be all on for signing up with them.

ParticipantThey’re affiliated with the British institute of Architectural Technologists but apart from that I’m in the dark.
Perhaps it’s a masonic thing? A secret Architectural society……where do I sign?

ParticipantDoes the use of the words “Group” and “independent” in the same title seem a little odd to anyone else?

Unless you are referring to bands from Manchester from the late 1980s/early 1990s! ๐
