I’ve decided after years of taking photos on my phone that its about time I invested in a good quality camera. Anyone got any idea of whats out there at the moment and what would be best value for money?? what do people on this forum use??
many thanks,
Dave. -

I bought a Canon EOS 400D at Christmas and is very good. Can upgrade lens over time but the camera body is quite good for the money. Approx €700.:(

Your best bet would probably be a compact digital- very portable, plenty of bells and whistles on most models, not ridiculously expensive. Something like the Canon Digital Ixus? http://www.canon.co.uk/For_Home/Product_Finder/Cameras/Digital_Camera/Ixus/index.asp
Have a look at review sites like Digital Photography Review– they do detailed reviews and you can compare different cameras. Doing a bit of homework will stand to you.
I recently got a second hand digital SLR camera- Olympus E-300. It’s great, but it’s a hefty enought piece of kit- not the kind of thing you can just drop in your bag every day, unlike compacts.
There are others here – Graham, Morlan and Paul – who know more about these things than I do. They’ll probably have useful things to say.
PS Have a look at second hand cameras too- a two year old camera would be cheaper than new but still have many of the same features. (Older camera reviews are archived on the review websites too.)

Currently using a nikon dslr after years of various film-based nikons, so I have a vast selection of modern lenses to go with the body
while not a light camera, i love it

A word of warning on the Canon Ixus – they have a common mechanical lens fault. Mine drove me mad until the thing finally broke, after 18 months of pretty careful use.I replaced it with a Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ3. It’s a point-and-shoot compact but it’s got a great 10X optical zoom Leica lens.
The zoom is amazing for a small camera, the tradeoff being that it’s bulkier and heavier and than most compacts. It still fits in your pocket though. About €100 dearer than an Ixus but 10 times better! -

It’s nice the way all the old Nikon lenses still fit onto the new digital bodies. With other manufacturers, a vast amount of stuff became obsolete once digiatal came in.

Yep i’ll vouch for that, great little cameras but my lens also went the same way, still though, it was a lot better than that bloody overpriced G6 heap of crap that i have now.
