ParticipantOK here’s a question that probably seems rather silly to most people here, but it’s one that I havent managed to answer for myself….
How can I tell the difference between whats georgian and whats victorian?? I briefly heard here before about differences in the horns on the sashes, but there must be other things…
I’ve found plenty of info on georgian dublin on the web, but I can find very little on what’s victorian…. I know there’s lots and lots of railway stations, churches, convents etc, but the average house on lets say the couth circular road or any of the squares in the city….
whats the difference between georgian and victorian??

InactiveI’m no expert myself, but generally Georgian Houses are more austere on the exterior. Main things to look out for are tall parapets that block the pitched roof behind (i.e. giving the building a flat-roofed look}), more sub-divisions in the glazing in the sashes (Georgian is earlier and hence large sheets of glass harder to manufacture). Victorian houses, tend to express the pitched roofs, have less subdivisions in the sash windows and you start to see the introduction of decorative brick detailing.
I’m sure there’s loads more others on this site can add but that is usually enough for basic distinction.
