Our neighbour is building a large garden shed in his back garden, while he is telling us it is under the permitted 25sq m, we’re not so sure, who can we go to and have this checked for us. Also he is making quite a lot of noise with power tools, hammers, etc, while we understand he needs to use them, it gets annoying when they can be heard from 8am to 10pm on certain days, noise laws dealing with noise from your neighbours seem a bit threadbare in this country i think, could be wrong though on that, but is there anything to maybe prevent him from using them after a certain time, it’s just that we leave in an estate, and we and a few more families are trying to get young kids off to sleep ay night, hard when you have that noise in the backround!!!

If you are worried about the size of the shed your neighbour is building, the only way really to have it verified as to whether it is exempt from planning or not is to conatct the enforcement section of your local authority, in writing, and they will then check it out.

This process is anonymous so if there are a number of neighbours concerned, your shed building neighbour will not know who raised the issue.

Just check that it is anonymous and not subject to the Freedom of Information Act requirements.

it should be fairly easy to judge the size of it based on its size relative to your own garden. Pace out the size of it in your own garden first.

The Environmental Protection Agency defines”nighttime” as 10pm to 8am.

It is a poor neighbour, however, that would do so knowing the unhappiness of local parents so it’s likley that (if you think it too big) enforcement is your route
