Participantmy window company are trying to tell me i cannot have a top hung window as an escape window. i thought all the regs state is that you have to have an ope 850mm high by 500mm wide and 800mm off the ground. My window is 1360mm wide and 1350mm high so surely this complies even if it is top hung??????

ParticipantRelevent section of Part B is 1.5.6 (page 56) see also 1.5.7.6

1.5.6 section d prohibits Horizontally hung windows below an escape window but I can’t see a reference to the Escape window itself.
The regs are generally common sense.
Logically I would avoid a top hung escape window as it will require effort to open & will not remain open. - March 8, 2006 at 7:29 pm #775600

ParticipantTop hung windows remain open just as easily as sid hung.
Top hung are definatly accepted means of escape, in fact the diagram in the regs shows a top hung window.
The company may have being trying to say that you cannot install all top hung windows, as horizontally hung windows on the lower floors below the escape are not permitted. - March 8, 2006 at 7:52 pm #775601

Participantwell i checked with chief fire officers x 2 and there is no reason why you can’t have top hung. the top hung i was getting stays at whatever level you open it anyhow. the fire officer told me that BS5588 Part 1 is going to be ammended and that as long as you have a 0.33m of an openable section with a 450mmx450mm ope.
