      Hey Gang:)

Like many here, I love looking at old architectural plans, particularly 18-19th Century engravings! What I find particularly facinating is discovering buildings that were never built. I am sure we all enjoyed the postings on another thread featuring some of the losing designs for the National Museum, and the magnificent plans by Soane for the Bank of Ireland.

I would like to propose this thread be dedicated to the posting and discussion of buildings which never graced our cities and towns for whatever reason. Granted, there is a section of unbuilt proposals already on archiseek, but most of them are Celtic Tiger era projects which most of us had already seen in newspapers and most of which can be readily found on the internet.

I was partly inspired to crate this thread (my first) by interesting topics over on Skyscrapercity Forums. They concern various unbuilt designs from right accross the UK starting with the Jacobean era running right up to the 1960s/1970s.

There doesn’t seem to be anything similar relating to Ireland. Whilst, I must confess that I don’t have much material to post myself I thought that I might get the ball rolling as several archiseek posters are a veritable goldmine of historical architectural information:)

What say ye?? It can really be anything from the mythical Gandon second place design in the Royal Exchange competition to Cooleys original Public Record Office design with one courtyard and no dome which morphed into the Four Courts we know today under Gandons pen. Right up to, Abercrombies plans, the Merrion Square Cathederal and the full plans for the Civic office!

PS: This is my first thread so mods if you think I am needlessly straying over old covered material thats ok!

I think Mr Cullen would have words with you as he has invested so much time in the Unbuilt Ireland archive

      Hey

Thanks for that Stephen! I was in two minds about wheather to even submit a separate thread. However, as I pointed out most of the buildings in the unbuilt section are very recent.

My idea was this thread could be the place where people could request/post older images. Which by definition are much harder to find.

      C
