Penny Lewis, the editor of Prospect Magazine, Scotland’s top architecture Magazine will be visiting Dublin this weekend for the RIBA Conference.
She asked me to list what I would consider to be the most interesting but out of the way buildings… of the beaten track so to speak, so no point listing the spike, for example because you can’t miss it.
I have said:
Utility Building in Clontarf by Tom de Paor
Chocolate Soup by Graven Images
Ussher Library Trinity
Medical Research Labs UCD by O’Donnell Tuomey
Timber Research Lab UCD BY McCulloch Mulvin
Student Centre UCD by Murray O’Laoire
Urban Institute UCD by Grafton Architects
New Residences Temple Bar by De Blacam Meagher
Ardoyne Mews Ballsbridge by Design StrategiesComments?
Any more ?:) -

Fingal County Hall (Bucholz McEvoy) might be a good one.

I’ve only ever seen that in the mags Andrew…it looks very good indeed right enough but I did’nt know how far out it would be, in truth

It’s fairly close to the Airport , perhaps 2 miles north on the main street in Swords.
A quick courtesy call on the way in to town from the airport would add maybe 30 minutes to the journey, more if you hopped out for a closer look.

5 that are underappreciated / off the map:
Grand Canal Basin – ESAT by de Blacam & Meagher, glass ‘tower’ by Shay Cleary, and Millennium Tower and new apartments (nearing completion), both by O’Mahony Pike
Clarion Quay in Docklands by Gerry Cahill, McGarry Ni Eanaigh & Derek Tynan
Marrowbone Lane – community centre by Henchion Reuter and Foyer by Brady Mallalieu, within 200 yards of each other
Calatrava’s Liffey bridge at Usher’s Island
Balgaddy A housing scheme in Clondalkin by Howley Harrington5 classics (outwith the Canals):
Sir Edwin Lutyens’s War Memorial, Islandbridge (1930s)
John Johansen’s American Embassy, Ballsbridge (1960s)
Sam Stephenson’s Institute for Advanced Studies, Burlington Road (1970s)
Arthur Gibney’s Irish Management Institute, Sandyford (1970s)
Ronnie Tallon’s RTE’s campus, Donnybrook (the same architect since 1960)2 ‘secret treasures’ to complete a worthy dozen:
de Blacam & Meagher’s ‘handed’ recreation of Loos’s American Bar (Vienna) on the first floor of Trinity’s Dining Hall (you must be invited by a Fellow of the College) (1987)
O’Donnell + Tuomey’s press room / reception centre, tucked away in the north-west corner of Dail Eireann, Kildare Street (you normally must be invited by a TD (Irish MP) to get in) (2002) -

Can’t argue with the five classics Trace, particularly Sam Stephenson’s Institute for Advanced Studies. The last time Penny visited Dublin though I think it was ten years ago, so it’s the recent stuff she is interested in.
What about Leinster House, the new work by O’Donnell Toumey?
Small but according to the AAI Awards Assessors ” very beautiful” is it accessible?

Sorry for causing confusion, aland, by using the project’s Irish form: ODT’s work at Leinster House is actually the final project I listed (Dail Eireann, pronounced something like ‘Doll Air-run’). It’s well worth trying to blag your way in past security or nobble a passing TD who’s got a few minutes to spare. Pretty miniscule compared to EMBT’s Hollyrood, though!

miniscule yeah, but a lot more restrained than Holyrood, Trace.
No one’s mentioned Benson and Forsyth’s gallery addition, is that a must see then, too obvious to mention?

No need to seek it out, as it’s the venue for the end-of-conference party on Saturday evening! It’s got great scale but fiddly (shoddy) details…

“fiddly (shoddy) details…” better not look too close at the other buildings listed above.

How about The Helix? Or is that too far across the Liffey? I have to disagree with Swords being too far to go to see Fingal County Hall – five fecking minutes from the airport?!
Also, I think Ballymun is worth a look, if only for the scale of what’s being done. -
July 9, 2004 at 7:24 pm #744006GrahamHParticipant
Don’t forget the Jervis Centre loos – the swankiest in town.

The Helix is terrible architecturally and not worth crossing the road to see – the main entrance foyer is like something from a tacky cruise liner…

National library James Joyce Exhibition is worth looking at.
