A few years ago there were plans to build a 9 ish storey building near Kilmainham Jail. What happened that? Are they currently builing this on the old factory site?
Work is well under way for a substantial complex of a hotel and appartments on this site……Dunno it will be 9 storeys…maybe in parts it will….The ”Old Chocolate Factory ” is the termed coined for the complex….sounds Willy Wonka-ish.
It was the former Rowntrees factory hence the name. John Lally is currently developing the site. a lot of the Apartments have been sold there already, not sure of completion date.
Did anyone go to the ‘Tall Buildings seminar’ in the National Gallery last week? I only just heard about it in an article from last Thursday’s Irish Times property supplement
Just to give an update on all tall buildings proposed for the near future
U2 tower will now be 120M and 35 stories – scheduled for completion in 2008 🙂
Hueston gate – construction will start next year and completion is due in 2011
Alto Vetro – no sign of construction as of yet – i visited the site yesterday

Also that second link http://www.treasuryholdings.ie/development/project_detail.asp?id=118&category=Residential&cat=1, thats right opposite Bolands Flour mills and very close to the new Docklands Public Space..since the Bolands Mills was bought for €42 Million I would like to see what is going to take the place of the grey facia section. Exciting times around that area but still a bit of a mess at the moment, would love to take a peek 10 years into the future to get an idea of how its going to look!Treasury Holdings are still waiting for the Revenue Commissioners, the Garda and the ERHA to get their arses of the Hueston site AFAIK, nothing can happen till then.
Good to see U2 tower increased to 120M, hopefully this will set a minimum standard in the area. The Point Village tower should be raised to match it.

does there seem to be a shift in the attitude to high rise buidings in ireland?? (because of this positive article)
not to be negative but that alto vetro rendering is ugly anyone agree, not a fan of blocky type buildings
it would be great if anyone one out there with a bit of computer skills and time on there hands could show us
how our u2 tower would stand up to these giantsYeah its crazy, the U2 Tower which will look like a giant (about the same height as the Spire) is still only just over a third the height of the Eiffel Tower, and look where that is in the pic above! However when people see it built I’m sure within a few years the 200M height will be broken.
Don’t know about that GregF, bit smaller perhaps? Then again the Pyramid of Cheops looks half the height of the Eiffel Tower in the pic yet its 1/3 the height in actuality.
Maybe they should take the spire and stick it on top of the U2 tower, double the height! Well, a lot of the other tall buildings seem to have done similar anyway..
While on a global scale, the U2 tower isn’t remarkable in height or concept (Turning Torso in Malmo, Sweeden)… it’s a big step for Ireland and Dublin specifically. I’m glad to hear about the height increase and a bit more information from the link posted. I can’t wait to see how it will actually look in person. Hueston Gate as well… I don’t think the renderings will do it justice.

it stands up well to the empire state which i see every day and that is pretty huge
maybe a little shorter and narrower would be more accurate??
but nonetheless looks good….. they built the empire state in 18 mths back in 1930(its true), whats the chances of them
gettin the finger out on this one!!!:DI dont really think Europe really suits the high rise model of some asian countroes or the USA. So seeing medium height buildings in Dublin seems about right. The only place in Dublin that would suit high rise would be Dublin Port if it got re located.
Cork Galway Limerick and Drogehda can all go high rise (100m+) of course : ) Its great to see that some high rise buildings are being built there.
