Im not awestruck with the U2 tower. Maybe if it were 100meter tall and had something more to offer than a simple twist

Where did that image of the U2 tower come from? I assume it’s the 100m version – it’s a massive improvement on the competition winning scheme and really looks quite dynamic and elegant. I hope it goes ahead in this form.
The other tower proposed for the next door site is a complete mess and should never have gotten planning. Hopefully something can be done to stop it from going ahead and ruining the effect of what could be a really spectacular landmark structure.

I think that rendering is the 100 meter version,
its depressing reading about nearly all decent tall buldings not going ahead
im living in nyc 4 yrs now but orig from the big smoke (dublin!!) no shortage here of
amazing buildings to look at
people have to wake up, its the future – we cant keep building 4 or 5 story structures in city centre
and 2 story semi d’s a couple of mins outside ‘downtown’ (sorry!!)nothin new in this post i know, but i had to say it
its seems people are v narrow minded when it comes to this
But from living in new york i see that rail transportation is essential to keeping high rise living going
7 mill people use nyc subway every dayp.s u2 tower looks pretty nice
4/5 story? IFSC and docklands is 7/8 story. This is the most dense development in the docklands.

The 100 meter tower is a lot better than the 60meter job.

that was my 1st post on this site !!
i havent stepped foot in ‘da ould sod’ in over 4 yrs!!Does anyone really think the U2 tower is that great? As far as I can make out from the rather poor pictures of it – and until I come across a model- I must say it looks deformed rather than elegant. I would love to see something like canary wharf tower or city hall in london, maybe something slightly more elaborate.
I concur Ake. I think they ran out of ideas when the U2 tower got the green light. The increase in height makes it a building that you might actually notice when your passing by but little else.
Apart from the increase of height and the very mild twist the tower is a nothing and one only has to travel to barcalona and places like that to see a city which has very impresssive buildings
The Docks have been a massive flop. Something like this in England France Spain etc wouldnt even be commented on. The bar is so low in Ireland that the low standard of work is accepted and celebrated 🙁
There’s absolutely no difference with the old one except for a proportional increase in size.
Regardless of size, there’s no getting away from the essentially unambitious design of the U2 Tower. Shouldn’t the visitor, arriving in Ireland for the first time, look out there and say “Wow, I’ve never seen anything like that anywhere else!”. This is building is emphatically not going to evoke those feelings, in natives or visitors, because it just looks like something plucked from the high building melee in Dallas or Dubai.
Maybe if there was a big enough protest this building could be binned for a more imaginative and distinct one.
Has the footprint grown too, Devin? From the image here I thought it was just taller and therefore more slender, with an altered cap (no longer pyramidal). Both changes are improvements on the original, but still far from good in my book. Every time I see the twist I think it looks like someone took a standard extruded-floorplate tower and just used one of the beginner’s tools in CAD- ‘Ooh I wonder what the “twist” button would do to this…?’
Also, has anyone passed the new Dunnes homewares place on George’s St in Dublin lately? There’s a vase in the window that bears a striking resemblance to the U2 tower. Coincidence? Evidence of the lack of imagination in the tower?
Any images of it up to now have always shown the same building except bigger (after the increase) , but in that last image posted it does appear to be stretched upwards rather than proportionally bigger …
AFAIK the top always looked different from both sides (pyramidal on one side and pointed on the other).i’d love too see a list (pics would be nice) of TALL or REASONABLY TALL buildings going up in or around dublin which are actually being built or are defo gonna be built.
Not many. Santy Cross in Ballymun is nearly finished, as are the stumpy Belgard Square and Smithfield Market. This tower near Fatima Mansions is topped out and I believe the Vantage building in Leopardstown is about to commence construction.
I heard someone mention that the new Smithfield Tower is either 12 or 13 storeys in height. From looking at that link above and from looking at it in reality it seems to only have 7 storeys including the ground floor. Where is this 12/13 floors coming from?
