      Hello there
Has anyone seen drawings showing new roads in the Douglas area that would improve access to the shopping centres (Douglas Village and Douglas Court)? I have a drawing (issued by a large Transport Consultancy firm) that shows new road proposals for the area. However, the Council are denying knowledge of these but I think the Consultancy firm were commissioned by the Council (perhaps for a Traffic Study a few years ago). If anyone has any info I would be grateful.

The Shipton Group, in conjunction with Bowen Construction, are advancing on plans to create a new town centre/commercial heart to Douglas Village. As part of the project a redevelopment to Douglas Village S.C. and improvements/alterations to Douglas Court S.C. (both in Shipton Group possession) will be initiated with a new core located between the 2 facilities on lands inclusive of the Permanent TSB, Cinema World and the greenfield site to the east of Cinema World. Options on the Shell Petrol station are as yet unknown – speculatively both John Hornibrook and Shipton/Bowen were said to be looking at it. The redevelopment of the area will link the 2 S.C. together – part of Douglas Village S.C. improvement is expected to include a new link road running west to east through the S.C. car-park and carrying on east toward Douglas Court and to a point accessing out toward Rochestown. The new link road should significantly amend current congestions experienced by the village where traffic is forced to navigate through the core simply to travel west toward Grange/Donnybrook or to connect back to the South Ring Road – or to travel south toward the East Village and Maryborough/Rochestown Roundabout.

I live in Frankfield and I never go there as traffic is always busy. Its easier for us to get to Wilton / Bishopstown for shopping etc. than to get to Douglas village which has everything but is very congested.
I can’t wait for the day when a book comes out describing how we ended up with 2 large shopping centres practically across the road from each other.
The proposal sounds interesting and urgently required for Douglas but I can imagine that anything on this scale will need a lot of deals done not to mention planning etc.
Also Douglas is still in the County area as far as I know which is a farce.

I thought Douglas was considered part of the city. It is served by city bus routes for example while the likes of Ballincollig (which is not much further out of town) is not (and bus fares are almost twice the price.)

The city really needs to be enlarged to reflect the growing suburbs.

The city boundary is the Tramore River, which flows through Douglas. This means that parts of Douglas are in the Cork City, while the bulk of Douglas is in Cork County.

The traffic lights at the junction of the Well Road are in the city, while the roundabout at the entrance to Tesco is in the county. I’m convinced that the complete lack of coordination between these two junctions is responsible for a lot of the traffic congestion.

      .

This is one of the reasons the place is in chaos. if memory serves there’s been rows between the two authorities about it for years

It is ridiculous to have city council refuse trucks picking up at one side of the road and county council trucks on the opposite?

having grown up there, douglas was never designed for the level of traffic it gets every day and nothing significant was ever done to fix it – I can add no extra info for you but if you can get the image of the plans you have on this site, i’d be very interested out of mere curiousity

The relief road past Douglas Court was supposed to deal with traffic congestion. However, there are three points in Douglas that can’t handle the traffic through them – the Well Road/Tesco junction, the fingerpost roundabout, the junction by Daily’s shop (although, the creation of the right hand-turning lane has improved this one a lot). The relief road just formed an alternative route between two of these.

There are a few solutions that could provide a bit of relief – full junction for traffic accessing the ring road in Rochestown and in the Back Douglas Rd, entirely remove the ring road junction on the Douglas Rd. Unfortunately, the presence of the estuary to the East means that creating a proper relief route is nearly impossible and the only practical solution is to provide people with decent alternatives to using their cars (when will that ever happen in Cork…)

As regards the roads proposals, Deirdre Clune distributed a leaflet to people who live in her ward a number of years ago. There was one road that disturbed me, which was a proposed road from the end of Grange, through Douglas Woods to the old Carrigaline Rd. Douglas Woods have been damaged enough in recent years without having a road driven through the middle of the remainder. If these roads are to be linked, I’d prefer to see an upgrade to the existing boreen above Donnybrook and that road extended to link up with the road that comes into Grange at Pinecroft. It would be as useful for relieving traffic congestion and by joining further out the Carrigaline road, would provide full access to the N28, rather than just Carrigaline/Ringaskiddy bound. It could also form a southern development boundary for Douglas. However, it would be significantly longer and consequently more expensive…

One of the easiest things that could be done that might seriously help Douglas’ traffic flow would be to look at upgrading the traffic lights on that road that goes across the village behind the shopping centre.

There are traffic lights at the centre of Douglas village which don’t seem to be the modern “intelligent” system used in the City and at the other end of the road there is a chaotic junction with no traffic lights just before that retail development in the old mill complex.

A little bit of intelligent use of traffic signalling could really speed things up through the area.

It might make sense to signalise the fingerpost too. It goes into total melt-down mode at rush hour.

Its just as crazy in Cobh.

Half of Cobh island is controlled by Cobh Town Council. The other half by GLANMIRE of all places.

Its silly, and of course theres constant fights to get things done. Its an example where common sense needs to be brought in for the greater good.

      S:confused:

ANy more sign of these drawings?

Theres no one looking after douglas. When taxis can pull up outside barrys pub and form an unofficial taxi rank thereby blocking off an entire lane then you know you’re in trouble.
