I’m working on a project that deals with the regenerative capacity of good infill development design in small towns and villages in Ireland. It essentially looks at how more sensitive collaboration with existing architectural character in the these forms of settlements can increase the attractiveness of small towns and villages for prospective rural dwellers.

It is my intention to use certain design criteria to assess how successful/unsuccessful modern developments have been in integrating with the existing built environment and what conclusions can be gained from this to establish more sustainable design guidelines for future development in rural settlements.

I’m looking for some suggestions as to what the most appropriate design criteria should be, given that my case studies are primarily Architactural Conservation Areas and their structures date primarily from the late 18th to mid-19th Century.
