Just wondering..does anyone have links to, or copies of pictures of the early Dail Chamber, and alternative designs etc? It’s such a beautiful little room and it’s history seems to be a bit patchy, apart from it being an RDS theatre and they raised the floor for the Dail.

Have you tried the book on Leinster House produced by the Irish Architectural Archive?
http://www.iarc.ie/publications/
Most good bookshops, etc. Try the RIAI shop by phone if you’re not in the city centre, or better still maybe the AAI has copies for sale? Or college libraries…?

Cheers. I have read that one alright. Good book, but I was really looking for pictures of the early chamber, which aren’t in it, not to mention any other proposed designs.
Also, what do people think about the other planned locations for the Dail? Royal Hospital? Four Courts? Custom House?I always thought the Castle would have been good, with City Hall altered to serve as a new entrance. But maybe in 1920s Ireland that wouldn’t have gone down well.

lol, cheers. Been on that before. I presume at some stage the building must have been comprehensively photographed over the decades. But it wouldn’t seem images are in the wider public domain. At least as far as my valiant little quest has gone!

Thanks very much, Graham! While I have read the excellent book published in recent years about Leinster House, a history of the building since it became home to our parliament would be interesting.

Regarding the curtain behind the Ceann Comhairle, the new electronic Dail voting screen is revealed whenever a division is called. Lights, laid out in the horse-shoe form of the chamber correspond to each seat/deputy and are lit green (T

lol, that’s gas.
I was in the gallery last week and was wondering; if they ever increase the number of seats, where on earth will everyone sit? Although I’ve heard there isn’t room for everyone at present…will they start using the front row? And why are the front from there at present if they’re not used? The security in the building is just laughable too…the things you could get away with. Not only do they not check bags, the metal detector is generally off.
Of interest to me, what do people think of the other venues shortlisted for the Oireachtas back in the 20s. Imagine if the Four Courts or Custom House was our parliament now (while I quite like LH, the latter there would be wonderful), or even the Royal Hospital..as was bizarrely suggested.
I maintain that the Castle would have been perfect, especially incorporating City Hall…but I suppose that wouldn’t have gone down well in the 20s.
