I was in Cork for the first time since last year, and I have to say the place looks exactly the same as I remember it. I know its only just over one year but as far as I can remember there’s only been about one development in the city centre of any note in the last 5 or 6 years, its like the place is in a time warp.

There was a discussion about a building in Cork (BHN or something) a few days ago, well best as I can figure it doesn’t exist. There’s literally nothing under construction in the city centre or its surrounds at the moment save for a small infill development of about 30 apartments.

There’s a Dublin docklands style box of offices (STW designed no doubt) about to begin construction on the quays alright, but as for the rest of the docklands – forget it, nothings been done in the few years since that was first brought up. To be honest Cork City is degenerating into a disgrace, and it pains me to say that about any Irish city. They need to get their finger out and fast because the last ten years have pretty much passed them by. I hate to say it but at the moment Cork gets my vote for most pathetic city in Ireland. The city deserves so much better than to be left crumble the way it is.

The corporation plan to develop Patricks street with money they got from selling a site for a shopping centre in the suburbs, but the way developments are announced in Cork and then never proceed I wouldn’t get my hopes up about it.

      yeah,
Have to agree. It’s a place with a lot of unrealised potential. Just seems to be a bit of malaise about the place. Interestingly it was the only Urban centre that recorded a drop in population in the recent cencus. Hopefully getting the city of Culture for 2005 might spark some activity. Here’s an interesting article about the courthouse that seems to sum the place up

The work on Patrick’s Street is already well under way; I was there last week and there is some pretty good quality paving going down at the quays end of it.
There are no cranes visible on the Cork skyline. This is unusual when compared to Dublin. Where are all the €300K apartments?
