The digital hub hasn’t been abandoned it was the MIT Europe lab that went into liquidation, from what I understand the digital hub will still happen.
Also to add to the list would be the Metro system and by that I mean the DTO metro of 2001 and not the ever changing crayon drawings produced by the Railway Procrastination Agency.
But you are right 3 out of 13 is a total joke 🙁

That’s a very selective list of 13 projects, and I think, Greg, you’ve set out to prove the glass is half-empty. Taking a starting point of 1995 (the birth of the Celtic Tiger), you could include a lot of other things that have been done, such as the redevelopment of Dublin docklands, the new library in TCD, the national gallery extension, the aquatic centre, the M1 motorway, the bypassing of Kildare and points west, etc.
Yes things do take ages, but the more considered approach sometimes work. Do we really need a Metro? Does anyone other than Michael O’Leary really think that a second terminal in Dublin Airport is essential? on the Abbey, for example, far better to take ages and get it right than rush into another mistake -

The saying then, pre Celtic Tiger was ”if only we had the money we could……”
A comparison, within the same time, besides rebuilding their rugby team and surpassing us, Wales have a massive National Stadium and an Opera House too. Scotland have their only Parliament buildings, London has the ”Eye” and a ”Gherkin”. Come on we can do better. Boundaries have to be pushed, else wallow forever in mediocrity! -

Confidential report rejected proposed airport terminal site
10 April 2005 By Niamh Connolly, Public Affairs Reporter
The report by US engineering consultants Skidmore, Owings and Merrill (SOM) and Irish consultants Project Management – seen by The Sunday Business Post – was presented to the former Aer Rianta board two years ago as part of its masterplan but has not been published. It found that the site at the airport’s north apron, proposed by the new Dublin Airport Authority (DAA) for the new terminal, provided the least benefits for the airport’s future expansion. Transport minister Martin Cullen is expected to present plans to cabinet for the DAA to build a second terminal on land it owns north of the existing terminal.
This is the DAA’s preferred option. However, international consultants warned that the space reserved for aircraft on this site would be “forever capped’‘ at just 30 “stands’‘. In addition, the new facility would not accommodate the 30 million additional passengers by 2018 forecasted in the airports’own masterplan. The cabinet debate may prove contentious with the PDs, led by Tánaiste Mary Harney, reaffirming this weekend that there needs to be competition at Dublin Airport.
The PD transport spokesmanTomMorrissey has called for the SOMreport to be published. He said there were only two parties that shouldn’t build the new terminal – Ryanair and theDAA. Aer Lingus has also voiced concerns about the DAA’s north apron site as it fears there will be insufficient airside space to accommodate its planned new wide-bodied long-haul aircraft. TheSOM/ProjectManagement report was commissioned in 2001 and is believed to have taken two years to complete. It is understood to have cost €3.5 million. One of two options favoured by the consultants in the report recommended that the terminal be developed east of the airport to include satellite piers and cargo facilities west of the runway on land privately owned by theMcEvaddys.
The second option was to ‘replace’ the existing terminal with a new facility and piers on the western site owned by the McEvaddys. The eastern site would then be reserved for cargo and a business park. However, DAA has made the north apron site its preferred option following requests from the government. The expert report ranks the north apron as the second least attractive of four possible options weighted by functionality, deliverability and cost. The north site was ranked second lowest on “functionality’‘, as it would accommodate only 12 million additional passengers and would reduce “two terminals of different capacities and services’‘. In the future, it would have to be “supplemented by satellite piers west of the 16/34’‘ (runway), on lands owned by the McEvaddys, the consultants said. The north sitewould also incur the highest longterm capital costs up to 2018, at €3.4 billion.
The optimal east site, which so far have not publicly figured in deliberations, would cost €3.14 billion. It is described as “most conducive to incremental expans ion and steady capit al expenditure’‘. The lowest long-term capital cost at €2.77 billion would be to build on land to thewest owned by the McEvaddys. This option would also incur the lowest operation and maintenance cost, according to the report. The north site rated second highest of the four options under “deliverability’‘ as the land is owned by DAA and no land purchase negotiations are required. Fine Gael’s Olivia Mitchell said it was unclear why the government and the DAA favour the north apron against the weight of the consultant report’s advice. “The only thing going for it is that the DAA owns the land,†she said.
Disruption linked with the north apron option by the consultants includes: * the demolition of existing multi-storey car parks; * relocating FLS to the far west, which would cost an estimated €80 million; * relocating cargo, and * considerable additional elevated roadway and second set of terminal roads.

The whole thing has been thrown out. There is a view now that it should be done in a piecemeal fashion like temple bar or plot by plot like Ballymun. This is after asking the private sector to fork out millions preparing bids. No wonder the PPP take up is so low in the business community. It’s like buying manhattan.

Just to clarify any misunderstandings on the Digital hub
http://www.rte.ie/business/2005/0412/jobs.html
Dublin Digital Hub wins games jobs
April 12, 2005 12:48
Canadian games company DC Studios is to set up a development studio in Dublin’s Digital Hub, backed by IDA Ireland.DC develops video games for consoles, PCs and mobile phones. The jobs will be for graduates, including software programmers, artists, designers and producers.
‘The digital media sector has been identified as an area of opportunity for this country and DC Studios, a young ambitious company, will be a valued addition to the growing cluster of digital media activities in Ireland, in particular games development,’ said Enterprise, Trade & Employment Minister Micheal Martin.
DC Studios said its decision to locate in Dublin was in response to substantial growth in its business, with many of its customers based in Europe. Ends
Now whether it is any more than two developers, a receptionist and a security gaurd I can’t clarify. The Digital Hub is a project I would like to see succeed as it is not only at the cutting edge but also has certain sub-cultural qualities.
The remaining issues on this thread are probably the main reasons why the Hub has been so slow to kick off.

Croker opens for soccer and rugby
Irish national soccer and rugby teams could soon be playing in front of Hill 16
Saturday, April 16 2005 5:40
The motion to let the GAA’s Central Council decide on the opening up of Croke Park to other sports has been carried by 227 to 97 vote. The GAA can now allow soccer and rugby to be played in Croke Park under certain circumstances.
The motion voted on, which had been put forward by Sligo, asked that Central Council be given the power to allow Croke Park to be used for other sports while Lansdowne Road is being redeveloped.
The debate that followed the secret ballot was emotional, touching on ideology, identity and ethos.
The Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism John O’Donoghue commended the GAA for their decision, calling it a hugely significant gesture which will benefit all Irish sporting fans.
He said: “Croke Park is a towering example of what can be achieved in terms of sporting infrastructure and a huge testament to the vision, foresight and resourcefulness of the GAA.”
And he attempted to allay the fear that the playing of non-GAA sports in Croke Park would give soccer and rugby an advantage: “I am confident that its temporary use for soccer and rugby will cement the public’s respect for our largest sporting organisation and place Gaelic games on an even stronger footing – both at home and internationally.”
So that leaves us with 4 done, 2 late but under construction and 7 either not started or as far away as ever

Delays ease at Dublin Airport
17 April 2005 16:51
The situation at Dublin Airport has improved after many passengers endured long queues earlier today at departure gates due to new stringent security checks. The more stringent procedures have been introduced at the airport as a result of an audit by the European Civil Aviation Council and the Department of Transport that revealed breaches in security.
Passengers travelling out of Dublin Airport are being advised to check-in at least 90 minutes before their flights and join the queue for security immediately.
Earlier, some passengers said they had been waiting for as long as two hours and were concerned that they may miss their flights.
A spokesperson for a number of the airlines has said it was a matter for the airlines and passengers if they missed flights.
Airport officials are warning that there will be long delays again at peak times tomorrow morning. Ends

Aquatic centre move ‘astonishing’ – judge
http://www.rte.ie/business/2005/0603/stadium.html
June 03, 2005 16:43
A High Court judge has said it is nothing short of astonishing that the lease for the National Aquatic Centre, a State asset worth €62m, was granted to Dublin Waterworld Ltd, a company which has paid no rent in over two years. The shareholding in Campus and Stadium Ireland Development Ltd (CSID), which granted the contract to Dublin Waterworld, is held by the Taoiseach and two Government Ministers.
Mr Justice Peter Kelly was giving judgment on an application by Dublin Waterworld for a stay on legal proceedings seeking possession of the centre.
In March 2003 CSID awarded the contract to operate the National Aquatic Centre to Dublin Waterworld Ltd on a 30-year lease.
CSID is the State company responsible for the site at Abbotstown in Dublin and its shareholding is held by the Taoiseach, the Minister for Finance and the Minister for Arts, Sport & Tourism.
In the High Court today Mr Justice Peter Kelly called it nothing short of astonishing that the lease for such a valuable State asset had been granted to a company with a share capital of €127 and no fixed or current assets except for a sum of over €12,000 due from its own subsidiary. He said the lease was comprehensive but of little benefit if the tenant is not a tenant of substance.
Dublin Waterworld, with registered offices in Tralee, has not paid a single cent in rent since it assumed possession, the court heard. And the judge pointed out that failure to pay rent long pre-dates the difficulties that arose earlier this year when the roof blew off.
During the court proceedings, €740,000, lodged as security against potential debts, was transferred to CSID but Mr Justice Kelly pointed out this left CSID with no guarantee against future debts and €300,000 was still outstanding.
CSID began proceedings seeking repossession of the centre. Then Dublin Waterworld asked the court to put a stay on these proceedings to allow issues to go to arbitration. Today Mr Justice Kelly decided that issues in relation to VAT and repair and maintenance can go to arbitration but not the question of non-payment of rent.
This means CSID can still proceed with court proceedings for repossession of the Aquatic Centre.

Heading for the High Court if not Strasbourg
Of the 6 National Government funded projects only an incomplete Luas has proceeded to completion, the Abbey is mired in a Beckett style malais, the incinerator is being actively blocked by the Tanaiste, the Digital Hub has become a property regeneration project entirely controlled by 2 private companies albeit welcome regeneration, the Bertie Bowl is dead and Dublin Airport is about as efficient as the Zimbabwean government ; of the local authority projects undertaken by DCC 3 have completed all years late and the other is yet to complete with no explanation for the slippage offered but this observer suspects it is because National Government was late delivering their slice of the funding; of the DDDA projects the National conference centre is years late and a completion date for the U2 Tower is anyones guess if ever. The GAA are the only people who have kept to their timetable from this list.
