Wonderful to see so little has changed in Dublin in 200 years.
Philip Luckome 1779:
‘Except for the few new streets which are paved and flagged like those of London, Dublin as a whole is abominally dirty and slippery’
Hibernian Magazine 1777
In this we read that coaches are often overturned by the piles of rubbish that accumulate on the streets.
Arthur Young:
‘I shall only remark that walking in the streets of Dublin, from the populousness of the principal thoroughfares, as well as the dirt and wretchedness of the canaille, is a most disgusting and uneasy exercise’
Oh dear.
