There is a new website now up and running detailing the developments of Carton House. While I am not in favour of this development at least they appear to have left a land bank to the front and back of the house. I think it is a major pity that they don’t leave at least the central block of the house alone and open it up to the public. I think this would give them great pulicity and at the end of the day it would only be a few rooms out of the house.

I agree that the Carton House development could be a lot worse. I can’t object to it. As a Dubliner who has never been to Carton, I cannot complain that I’m losing some of my heritage.
I was once totally against the revision of historic buildings for new commercial uses but I have changed my mind recently. For example, the Bewlays Hotel on Merrion Rd pays due respect to the facade of Thomas Prior House. I do not know what internal features were kept or lost and cannot speak to that. But I know that for all my initial dismay at Thomas Prior House’s conversion to a hotel, I’d never ventured inside or done more than glance in its direction as I passed by. At least the building is now in use rather than in mothballs.

Did any see anything in the either the Sunday Tribune (18th of Feb) or the Irish Times (17th of Feb) about an upcoming exhibition in Carton House about house keeping in big houses in Ireland. A friend of mine saw the paper but has no further details.

Just seen this.
I have visited Carton Demense this summer and I think to date the fact that the estate will be open to the public again is a major positive development and it looks like the developers have sepnd a lot of money on the firt phase of the house renovations.
This new hotel development worries me hugely, because one of the archectural wonders of Carton House is the symmetry, which will now be broken.
Obviously this development with the Irish open etc is going to further develop and I wonder where the first extension to the hotel will go.
I am amazed that planners allowed them to build a 21st century builting beside an 17th/18th gem.I am all for development and I would have had no problem with a hotel somewhere within the 1000 acre demense. I strongly feel the house the Shell Cottage should have remained as a centre pieces of the estate without any alternations to its archectiture.

Photos of a recent visit,
The owners, architects and builders deserve a lot of credit for the quality of work.

Think you need to repost those photos, Can’t see any of them.
I was on site in Carton House a while ago, I know alot of people have concerns that it will be a Hotel just stuck on to the existing buildings with little or no concern. There is still alot of work to do, but I know from what I saw that one of the main concerns was the the original was disturbed as little as possible. -

With the Demise of Pierse I wonder what will happen to Carton House, considering Jed Pierse and developer/hotelier Paddy Kelly are major stakeholders and Pierse carried out the refurb & new build.
