Call for artists/designers for the NEW Cow’s Lane Market

This March Cow’s Lane Market, Temple Bar is being re-launched!

Its new name (to be announced shortly) and identity will depict an outdoor shopping area where hand-made designer goods are sold by Irish and Ireland-based artists and designers.

Cow’s Lane has a clear focus where priority is given to artists/designers & makers rather than imported, mass-produced items.

Cow’s Lane will sell designer clothing & fashion; hand-bags, accessories & jewellery; ceramics, pottery and visual arts of all disciplines.

If you are an artist/designer looking for a platform from which to expose and sell your work, please contact Eimear for an application form at echaomhanach@templebar.ie or for further information please phone on 01 677 2255. Closing date for Applications 31 January 2008.

The problem is it gets no footfall! Nothing has ever worked here because people dont go down to this area of the city. I was there at Christmas and the market was lifeless.

A couple of things could be done though:

      • Encourage great connectivity with the main part of Temple Bar, much as I hate it the Clarence proposals may actually achieve this .
      • Change the priority on Parliament Street to remove the perceived traffic barrier from Essex Street.
      • The Old City are has FINALLY been repaved and upgraded and its very welcome. The Smock Alley theatre is on its way but what the area needs is a big draw. One proposal raised and then lost in the ether was a Dublin City Museum in the grounds of the Civic Offices and linking in with Christchurch Cathedral. This should be progressed as soon as possible. The Old City Wall Plan…remember that?…and the Cathedral Quarter Plan…that one too?….. they all have a bearing on the success of this part of the city. So why are these reports lying on shelves and when are we going to see some activity from DCC to implement them.

Temple Bar is suffering from the inertia of the City Council. The many problems of the area are well illustared elsewhere on this forum. Its time for a bit of action.

One thing I liked about this was that it demonstrated people belief in art, it was quite moving, when it became obvious that Cow’s Lane wasn’t working, no footfall, the traders on the street blamed for council for not erecting the promised piece of public art at the end: something they were sure would of established the area in the public mind.

Cows Lane (please DON’Tchange the name!) will work some day, but these high-value shopping areas are very prone to fashion and are liable to feel the draught in any economic downturn. Not helped be ‘superior’ staff and prices designed to curl your toes unless you’re a shopaholic and they can see you coming. What it needs are cafes and genuine owner-occupied ’boutiques’ based on good design (= lowering rents and prices?). You Dubs are second only to Scousers in the moaning bastard stakes!

I think it is _Cow’s Lane_, at least I check before my post and that is what the map on http://www.templebar.ie has. I seem to remember some made-up story, like, it was supposed to be Cows Lane but they got the Irish wrong and rather than admit it, they changed the English name.

      Làna no mBò…??

The comments regarding a “Draw” for this less than populated part of Temple Bar are well worth examining.
One thing`s for sure Dublin City Council could IF it wished do a LOT more to give a gee-up to the area.
For a start they could tie-in with the Natural History Museum who are desperate to find a temporary location whilst their staircase repairs are progressed.

One of the long lasting aspects of this is the usual boundless lethargy which tends to envelope all such projects that fall outside of the An Làr principle ! 😮
