Building Exhibition, 4 – 7 October at RDS Simmonscourt
Not strictly an architectural matter, but relating to a thread early in the year where we discussed the quality of building currently going up in Ireland, there will be an interesting product at the above show: look for FBT’s stand and talk to Wolfgang. FBT are now importing and building with the German ‘Poroton’ block, a Terracotta cellular building block, with good structural properties (e.g., 10 kN/m³), good thermal resistance (lamda 0.11W/(mK)) and sound insulation (51dB). It is suitable for thin-joint mortar, as well.
U-values of 0.2 W/(m²K) or better are readily obtainable, construction time is reduced by as much as 33% and detailing simplified, as this material can be used through out the building, reducing the problem of interfacing disparate materials.
