Two brothers living in England are seeking to take possession of Mallow town park at the end of this month when a lease granted by their ancestors nearly 100 years ago expires.
They have asked Mallow Town Council to vacate the 34-acre park, which includes recreational facilities and pitches used by sports organisations.
The brothers, Michael and Patrick Jephson, whose ancestors owned Mallow Castle, have written to the council seeking to put in place arrangements for the handing back of the park when the 99-year lease expires on October 31st.
The park was given to the people of Mallow for use as an amenity in 1907 by the then owner of Mallow Castle, Katherine Jephson Norreys. It continues to be used by many local sports clubs, with Mallow GAA, soccer and rugby clubs all having pitches there.

Let’s go easy on the “anscestors” owning Mallow castle…there may be still a few people around who remember the Desmond Rebellion and the arrival of a certain Norris as Lord President of Munster. I suppose this move will finally kill off the suggestion made some time ago that this would meake an excellent site for the construction of a new floating Cathedral for the diocese of Cloyne.

From this morning’s Sunday Independent:
Cork deal for palace brothers
RALPH RIEGEL
A BUCKINGHAM Palacehospitality director is set to be offered close to €1m for a 34-acre park donated to a Cork town for public use by one of his ancestors.
Mallow Town Council is now liaising with Cork County Council over a new, improved offer for a 34-acre town park after brothers Patrick and Michael Jephson rejected their opening €500,000 package.
Michael Jephson is the director of Royal hospitality at Buckingham Palace – and is on first name terms with Queen Elizabeth II.
Michael will divide any settlement received for Mallow Town Park with his brother, Patrick, who is a former personal aide to Princess Diana.
Both brothers live in London and were educated in Britain, but their family was once one of the leading landowners in the north Cork town of Mallow.
The revised council offer will be tabled early in the New Year, but council sources refused to confirm whether it will match the reported €1m asking price.
