Santa’s workshop in the St. Stephen’s Green shopping centre. Best thing I have seen in all of Dublin so far. 🙂

modern:the central bank pre railings, berkley library, trinity.old. has to be the custom house.

Totally agree with you Sue. It’s got to be the Bank of Ireland, with the custom house coming in second.

Another fav of mine is St Annes on Dawson street.

the bank of ireland is just an applied gandon facade, i dont think that qualifies as the best ever irish building.

Although I hav’nt seen it in the flesh I like the look of the Technical College in Bishoptown by De Blacam Meagher. I also think the Spike is amazing

There is something I really like about the City Hall in Dublin. I like the way it really dominates Parliament Street. I personally would prefer it to the Custom House. With regard to modern buildings, I like Bank of Ireland Baggot Street, Central Bank (as with What? in its pre-railing state), I also really like the Ussher and the Berkeley libraries, but the Ussher can be a bit noisy due to the atrium running straight through it (phones can be heard all the time). The light in it is great though and it is a very comfortable place to study when it is quiet. I also really like those two new buildings in UCD, the Virus Reference Lab by McCullough Mulvin and the Medical Research Lab by O’Donnell and Tuomey Architects. I might be a little hurried mentioning them here but it is like all of these ‘best ever’ lists, I would tend to be favourable to things which are in my mind at the time.

yep interior space inside city hall is possibly the best in the city vying with the long room in the old trinity library. im sure that most dubliners havnt been inside either of these two buildings.

Another pleasing aspect to City hall is the visibility into the building from the Castle St side.

Fantastic building really a pity that Capel St doesn’t capitalise more on it.

Which is such a pity It is typical of the refusal of many Southsiders to drink North of the Liffey

Nah – the Custom House is taking the easy way out – I never really became attached to this building – its too perfect. Like a pretty girl fluttering her eyelashes aching to be liked.
Still stunning though.

Bank of Ireland is my favourite, with City Hall and Trinity’s West Front joint second. Trinity’s too well known as an institution with the Book of Kells etc – so the west front is just glossed over by everyone. I think it’s just perfect, so simple and elegant – a more continental style really.

And the central block of the other BOI as my modern.
Damn that bank – they’ve monopolies in everything!

Its not a grave though, theirs bodies buried in christchurch, dosen’t make it a grave.

Is anyone familiar with Lismore Castle in Co. Waterford? It may not be the most architecturally or historically significant building, but its setting makes it one of the most spectacular buildings I’ve seen in this country.
