ParticipantHi All
I am looking at the idea of an atrium space being used to make apartments dual-aspect/ at least to give the second aspect a source of some natural light and visual relief. I am just wondering if anyone knows of any examples of atrium’s being used in Dublin City to the benefit of their future residents? And at what width would such a space become beneficial rather than just a token?
thanks!! LL

InactiveIt might be worth having a look at the Winter Garden apartments (I think that is their name) on Pearse Street. They are a converted warehouse as far as I know, and have an atrium running their entire lenght. They are located behind the Holiday Inn.

InactiveMy thoughts exactly, phil.
The atrium in that building is its best feature unfortunately. Of the few apts I’ve been in, none has been great. Possibly a consequence of all those concrete columns left over from its warehouse function.
Also, even though the atrium is a sort of public space for residents, you can’t lock your bike in it the way you could in a regular courtyard. It’s still treated as an indoor space.

Inactivethose apartments are shocking.
a good example of a central atrium with double loaded apartments would be roebuck hill out in mount merrion. it’s in the new urban housing book published by the riai. the scheme is by o’mahony pike and allows for natural light into a bathroom and study/dining room which faces onto the naturally lit atrium with gallery acces to the apartments.

Agreed. I was really suprised at how badly laid out they were once inside. Nice idea, badly executed.

Inactivethere was a thread recently about somebody converting the “attic” above one of the top level apartments into a storage area or study. i did an application for the same thing in there, and it’s only one of the daft schemes going on. it seems that there are (or were) connections to the street to the north of the complex that have been closed off by retail or office units which appear unoccupied. also, the access to carparking is mysterious and the circulation in general is poorly organised.
