I have been asked about the Ark Theatre in Dublin. Being a non-resident I am not aware of the project. Who was the architect and are there any images available? All info gratefully received.

      Paul Clerkin
      Keymaster

Architects: Shane O’Toole & Michael Kelly

The Ark is Europe’s first cultural centre for children and contains a gallery, workshops and a 150 seater theatre. The main facade is the retention of the previous building on the site facade while the new face to Meetinghouse Square is shown here. This facade contains a giant theatre curtain (designed by Calatrava) which opens up to reveal a stage so as to use the square as an outdoor theatre. The interior plan is based on the original Presbyterian Meeting House which was on the site

Starch, sorry, meant to respond the other day but kind of slipped my mind. Not sure of the answer, but think I might know where to get it. Try the 1996 Temple Bar Properties Publication: Temple Bar: The Power of an Idea. More information on the Temple Bar Cultural Trust web-site: http://www.templebar.ie/home_nav_16.html

Don’t have my copy ready to hand at present, so can’t be of more help.

      Also try Paul Keogh architects:

Seems to have been Shane O’Toole and Michael Kelly as part of The Ark. See page 102 of Temple Bar: The Power of an Idea. I am glad you asked, as I have always kind of wondered, but I had been a bit lazy to find out exactly who it was. Incidently, that is quite a good publication. Some good essays, and general information. Interesting also to see images of some of the Group 91 buildings when they were new.

      Thanks, Phil
