Advise on starting off

Hi, I’m a mature student who has recently returned to live in Ireland. I have always enjoyed architecture and so have decided to take the giant leap and gain a qualification and develop a career in architecture (my background is Law). I have been told i am too late to submit an application to the colleges and so will have to wait a year. I don’t wish to waste this time and so would like to ask those in the know what practical things can i do or undertake that will benefit me in developing any skills needed for this industry.
