ParticipantThis morning at the KCR I passed two bus shelters with their glass smashed out, and scattered in tiny fragements all along the pavement. It got me to wondering – how come Adshel and Dublin Bus cannot create a gouger-proof transparent glass for bus shelters?
Anyone got any ideas? Surely there’s some sort of unbreakable plastic that could be used in these bus shelters instead of glass?

Irish Rail have tackled this problem by installing crude metal shelters at some stations, but these would look completely out of place on any streetscape.

Inactivemost stops that have been continually vandalised have had their glass replaced with plastic, looks crap, but is fairly vandal proof …

ParticipantI was speaking to someone in Adshel about this a few years ago – and it works out cheaper in the long run to have vanalisable glass – strange eh

ParticipantI wish they would put more thought into where/in what direction they put them, as many offer little protection from the wing and rain.

It is not about shelter for people it is about shelter for advertising.

ParticipantThat’s the trick: They have to pretend it’s for people when it’s sole purpose is really advertising. They would never get planning permission for a billboard or hoarding on the side of the road otherwise. In many other countries, the shelters are actually shelters and face out the other direction so vehicles don’t splash you as they pass.

ParticipantDCC doesn’t seem to spend much time thinking about where these shelters go either. There’s one really busy stop at Drumcondra Station with big, opaque phone boxes stuck right in front, in the direction the traffic is coming. Loading bays make it even worse.
So you get gangs of people leaving the shelter and standing out in the road trying to see around the phone boxes! - June 6, 2003 at 10:36 am #725532

ParticipantThere is a new bus shelter similar in style to the taxi shelters (but is definitely a bus shelter) going up outside the eircom HQ on St Stephens green – the shape of things to come? Lets hope so
