It seems to me that this is a good idea but in the wrong place. Good to see that low density suburban sprawl is getting the thumbs down, but is this just too far out, beyond the m50? Should they be deveoping brownfeild sites in the city.

this is what happens when u get 3 county councils instead of on elarger Dublin authority. Here’s what the indo says

KEY transportation and environmental issues for a controversial new town in West Dublin will be hammered out during today’s An Bord Pleanala oral hearing session.

South Dublin County Council is planning to build some 10,000 new homes catering for a population in excess of 20,000 people on 500 acres of lands at Adamstown in Lucan over the next decade in the country’s first major Strategic Development Zone scheme of its type.

Also up for discussion today will be community facility provisions, as well as the phasing and implementation sections of the plans. It is expected that Department of Education officials will attend Wednesday’s hearing to address crucial schooling issues.

Many of the objections lodged to the plans relate to traffic issues, potential flooding, the height of buildings – some of which rise to 10 storeys – and the need for proper general operational services.

Senior executive planner with South Dublin County Council, Paul Hogan, told yesterday’s hearing that Adamstown would be built to best practice in planning and design to create sustainable living communities, not just large-scale housing developments.

Adamstown SDZ consists of 11 development areas and four amenity areas with a maximum of 10,150 homes, four schools, two new quality bus corridor routes, park-and-ride facilities, pedestrian and cycling routes, a fire station and its own railway station.

The plan also contains commercial, retail, office and leisure facilities.

It also proposes 13km of internal main-road network featuring six principal external access points created during the various construction phases.

Will the QBCs have buses on them (unlike the one on the Chapelizod bypass) and more importantly, will any buses so provided use the bus corridor? I got a lift into work today (as opposed to using the train) and the buses along the N4 were out in the main lanes, leaving the QBC empty.
