ParticipantWhat with St Patricks Day almost upon us, surely our fair city should be looking its best…or as best as it can look in these pre-LUAS days. O’Connell Street is going to look miserable for the parade but I suppose there’s not a lot we can do about that….no pain no gain.
But…surely the CC can splash out on a steam cleaner and get to work on the Boardwalk and the Ha’penny and Millennium Bridges. The railings are filthy. Such a lack of basic maintenance is unacceptable. And they still havent made any effort to repair the broken lights on the Millenium Bridge.
Then there’s the new book stalls on Grattan Bridge. Any news on when they will open for business?

ParticipantHave you suggested this to the cleansing department?
If everyone on the forum calls them on Tel: 353 1 411300 I’m sure they’ll give the bridge a quick blast and maybe even put in a few replacement bulbs. -

ParticipantHmmm…

http://www.cleanpoint.com/bio-productions/citraclean.htmlMy old university, DCU, asked the campus shop to stop selling chewing gum due to the excessive cost of cleaning it up. I’d prefer to make people caught throwing gum away in the street soften the oldest spots with their tongues, but I doubt that will happen.

ParticipantAs well as the lights gone on the Millennium Bridge I want to add too the central statue figure on top of the GPO which is unlit too ……and add too the lighting of Liberty Hall as someone noted before.

ParticipantAny chance TCD would do a steam clean or pressure wash on Westland Row / Pearse Street? – about as likely as Paul getting an honorary degree for this site, I am afraid

ParticipantWell they’ve cleaned up the Buildings on Westland Row a bit over the past few months – only problem seems to be the pavements around Westland Row and Lincoln Place are permanently covered in Puke. Can they stop beer promos in the Pav or something?

ParticipantI believe laser cleaning (heard it on BBC Radio 4) is the latest method of cleaning stonework without the blasting effect of sand. Some firm in Northern Ireland has perfected the process and does a lot of work on Cathedrals in Britain…anyone any info..has any building been laser treated here?

ParticipantWestland Row is looking spectacular at the moment, all of it’s (Trinity’s bldgs) house’s brickwork looks nothing short of ravishing(is that a word?), as it glows in the sunshine. As Ireland’s most impressive (only?) Regency styled terrace it deserves to be looking it’s best.
Which is more than can be said for the West Front of Trinity facing onto College Green, which has been shrouded in complete darkness every night for the past half year, which I pass every night. Its crazy. Whats happened to it’s spectacular white floodlighting? All of the lights are still there, behind the railing’s granite base, although some are pointed in the wrong direction.
And the disgraceful state of the Custom House’s lighting, and the Four Courts, the GPOs crappy orange uplighters are blowing by the minute, Christ Church is in permenent darkness, the statues on Gandon’s portico of the Bank of Ireland are blowing, orange light is an insult to the white Portland Stone of it’s main facade, the National Museum and Library have no lighting at all, Leinster House is laughable, and as for the city’s bridges…

ParticipantThe lights on the new Millennium Bridge are lighting again. However with the makeover just recently done on O Connell Bridge House I see that the clock has stopped and nobody has fixed it or adjusted the time……. and for such a central focal point too in the city…what a shame.
Imagine being in London and seeing Big Ben stalled for weeks neglected and forgotton. Would say a lot about it’s people if it were the case. -

Keymasteri think we should take a leaf out of the Skibereen Eagle and change the title of this tread to
“Dublin Corporation, we have our eye on you”

ParticipantAll these observant people wandering the streets of Dublin at night!
I got Pat Cadden of the DCC in on the act and emailed him about the three bridges lighting, ei well done about the replacements on O’Connell Bridge, sort out the Millennium Bridge please and dont forget the lanterns on Capel Street Brodge which have yet to be connected up (even though the restoration on the bridge finish last year!)Regarding Westland Row: Trinity may have done a clean up and piant job on the buildings but its not particularly high quality. The have left all those horrible doorways intact and not even bothered to call in the window cleaners. And as has been recognised many times on this site, Trinity have not exactly proved to be the best guardians of the sizeable amount of architectural heritage they look after in Dublin city….need I mention Pearse Street.

ParticipantWestland Row. The job has yet to be finished, but I agree that the standard of workmanship is poor, the corroded railings have not been restored, many areas need re-rendering, and they’re just painting over the problems. And yes, that nasty shopfront slap bang in the middle hasn’t been removed. Still the restored brickwork is WOW! And the some of the houses have really charming bootscrapers, in the shape of dragons.(just thought I’d throw that in)
