The Government have just published a bill aimed at ending the dual mandate among TDs and Councillors. However they have dropped plans to introduce directly elected mayors.
I think this is such a missed opportunity. Our major urban centres might benefit greatly from strong executive mayors to introduce and push through major schemes.
It would be such an improvement on the current mix of part time councillors on tehir stepping stone to the Dail and unelected technocrats.
