I’d say it possibly relates to the curtilage of the structure onto Mary St which would be sufficient to accomodate a good number of tables & chairs; this is also both necessary and welcome. I was involved in some in depth analysis of peak time footfall patterns on Henry St and Mary St late last year, independent findings were that the footfall figures at the end of the Jervis centre bear no relation to those on Henry St or any point west of the entrance to the Jervis Centre.
The central retail core as outlined in fig. 4 of chapter 8 of the development plan lists the retail core in 2011 as stretching as far as Greek St to the West along a central axis being Mary’s Abbey. To call 95% of the area west of Capel St part of a retail core makes no sense in 2005, however between the Markets area plan and the nature of much of the building stock in this area it does look possible that this could be well advanced by 2011 if consumption holds up.
The removal of disparate clutter within the curtillage of St Mary’s Church that has constituted a detrimnental visual blockage at an important focal point and replacement of the land use with a visually attractive service use is most welcome.
