The cost of building this small courthouse, originally called the New Hall, also referred to as the town hall, was defrayed by the sixth Earl Fitzwilliam whose seat was at nearby Coolattin. It was also a venue for meetings and dances, and it continues to host community events. A simple building with ornamental bargeboards, its crowning glory is the decorative clocktower in the centre. It has been put forward that “Mr Fieldsend” who may have worked for the Fitzwilliams on their main estate in Yorkshire as there is no mention of any other work in Ireland.
