Cahersiveen railway station was on the Great Southern and Western Railway (GS&WR) which ran from Farranfore to Valentia Harbour.
Built by the Londonderry & Lough Swilly Railway Company as part of the Buncrana to Carndonagh section of the narrow gauge railway line which opened on the 1st of July 1901 and closed in December 1935.
When the First World War ended in 1918 the question arose of a suitable war memorial to Irish Presbyterians who had made the supreme sacrifice –
