Constructed for the seaside resort of Bray with 130 bedrooms,

Rathdrum railway hotel was built by the Dublin & South Eastern Railway as The Royal Fitzwilliam Hotel and opened on 26 October 1863.
In 1861 Parliament passed the Dublin Waterworks Act creating a project to dam the River Vartry in Roundwood to form the Vartry Reservoir.

Shillelagh railway station opened on 22 May 1865 at the end of a branchline from Woodenbridge via Aughrim and Tinahely.
Still in use today, it was described at the time of its completion as a ‘very neat little church’.
