Built in 1227 by King Henry III of England, populated by up to 1000 people in it’s heyday.
Probably founded by a Norman lord, John de Cogan in the first half of the 13th century.
In 1241, the Dominican Abbey was founded by Meiler de Bermingham,
Known locally as the Abbey, this Dominican Friary was founded in the mid-13th century by Maurice FitzGerald,
Originally a site of a Franciscan Friary, it was transferred to the Dominicans in 1252.
Founded in 1253 and consecrated in 1257. The church originally consisted of one long aisle with lancet windows.
