The library was a joint project funded by Andrew Carnegie and the local council on land provided by the council.
Designed by James Glen Sivewright Gibson (1861-1951) after an architectural competition and constructed between 1900 and 1905.
Listed Grade II, finished externally in red brick,

This building with its distinctive large windows helped Burlem School of Art become prominent in the district –
