1842 – Brownlow House, Lurgan, Co. Armagh
Architect: William Playfair
A large Elizabethan-Revival mansion designed by William Playfair and built between 1836 and 1842. The client Charles Brownlow, later 1st Baron Lurgan, had known Playfair as a student at Edinburgh. Built of Scotch honey-coloured freestone, a forest of decorative chimney stacks dominates the skyline with its numerous gables and finials, leading the eye to the domed tower. The interior is no less ornate with the main reception rooms decorated with panels painted to look like verd-antique; the ceilings grained to resemble various woods. Brownlow House was sold by the Lurgan family to the Orange Order in 1903.
